Kaixin Wei et al.

Summary: A series of nickel-incorporated SBA-15 mesoporous molecular sieves (Ni-SBA-15) were prepared as support for the immobilization of his-tagged recombinant Microbacterium esterase. The amount of nickel in Ni-SBA-15 significantly influenced the performance of the immobilized enzyme, while the type of nickel precursor had minimal effect on enzyme stability. The immobilized esterase exhibited high stability and reusability.

Biochemical characterization of Dimocarpus longan polyphenol oxidase provides insights into its catalytic efficiency

Leela Ruckthong et al.

Summary: Dragon-eye fruits produced by the tropical longan tree are rich in nutrients and antioxidants. In this study, the researchers cloned and studied the PPO gene (DlPPO1) from the leaves of Dimocarpus longan. They found that the signal peptide in DlPPO1 may stabilize its structure and that it exhibits high specificity towards the natural diphenol (-)-epicatechin. These findings provide insights into the characteristics and substrate affinity of DlPPO1.

Influence of strong iron-binding ligands on cloud water oxidant capacity

Aridane G. Gonzalez et al.

Summary: Iron plays a dual role in atmospheric chemistry, serving as both a reactive species and a micronutrient for microorganisms. The production of organic ligands by these microorganisms affects the reactivity of iron and the oxidant capacity of cloud water. Experimental measurements and model analysis reveal that complexation of iron impacts the formation rate of hydroxyl radicals in cloud water.

Towards the identification of humic ligands associated with iron transport through a salinity gradient

Kavi M. Heerah et al.

Summary: This study used Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to identify and quantify iron-binding ligands in a boreal river in Canada. The results show that there are two pools of organic ligands with different behaviors towards iron across a salinity gradient. The stronger ligands play a significant role in providing iron to the coastal and marine environment, while the weaker ligands contribute to iron uptake by flocculation at low salinities.
