Long-term comparison of root coverage procedures at single RT2 maxillary gingival recessions: Ten-year extension results from a randomized, controlled clinical trial

Francesco Cairo et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term outcomes of root coverage after connective tissue graft plus coronally advanced flap (CTG + CAF) or CAF alone in maxillary gingival recession. After 10 years, the test group showed a significantly higher rate of complete root coverage compared to the control group. In addition, the addition of CTG resulted in greater keratinized tissue gain and papilla tip recession. There were no differences in recession reduction, root coverage aesthetic score, and patient satisfaction.

Diagnostic reproducibility of the 2018 Classification of Gingival Recession Defects and Gingival Phenotype: A multicenter inter- and intra-examiner agreement study

Giovanpaolo Pini Prato et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the inter- and intra-examiner agreement among international experts on the diagnosis of gingival recession defects. The results showed that the 2018 Classification of Gingival Recession Defects and Gingival Phenotype had highest intra- and inter-examiner agreement for keratinized tissue width (KTW) and lowest agreement for gingival thickness (GT).

Coronally advanced flap versus tunnel technique for the treatment of peri-implant soft tissue dehiscences with the connective tissue graft: A randomized, controlled clinical trial

Lorenzo Tavelli et al.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of coronally advanced flap (CAF) versus tunnel technique (TUN) in covering mid-facial peri-implant soft tissue dehiscences (PSTDs). The results showed that CAF + CTG yielded superior outcomes in terms of PSTD coverage, keratinized mucosa width, mucosal thickness, and aesthetic evaluation compared to TUN + CTG. Therefore, CAF + CTG treatment can achieve excellent repair of PSTDs.

Summary: The aim of this study was to test the inter-examiner agreement when utilizing the established rubrics among clinicians of different skill levels in assessing peri-implant esthetic complications. The results showed reproducible and consistent responses among the examiners, with periodontists and residents more likely to agree with the gold standard examiner's assessment.

Recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor improves root coverage of a collagen matrix for multiple adjacent gingival recessions: A triple-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled trial

Lorenzo Tavelli et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor (rhPDGF)-BB combined with a cross-linked collagen matrix (CCM) for the treatment of multiple adjacent gingival recession type 1 defects (MAGRs). The results showed that rhPDGF could improve mean root coverage, increase gingival thickness, and enhance aesthetic outcomes for patients.

On the value of the 2017 classification of phenotype and gingival recessions

Giovanpaolo Pini Prato et al.

Summary: The 2017 World Workshop on periodontology completely restructured knowledge in the field, particularly focusing on the classification of phenotype and gingival recession. Despite the significant advantages of the new classification, recent articles still use outdated systems, emphasizing the importance of fully integrating the new classification into research and practice settings.

Patient experience of autogenous soft tissue grafting has an implication for future treatment: A 10 to 15-year cross-sectional study

Lorenzo Tavelli et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of soft tissue grafting procedures conducted over a decade ago on patients' willingness to undergo the surgery again and their satisfaction levels. Results showed that pain level, number of treated sites, and arch location had a negative effect on the willingness to retreat, while complete root coverage was significantly associated with higher patient satisfaction.

Summary: Microsurgery has significantly improved mean root coverage and the probability of achieving complete root coverage in periodontal plastic surgery. It also reduces postoperative pain, enhances aesthetics, and improves post-surgical recovery. These positive outcomes may be attributed to the minimally invasive approach and surgical precision of microsurgery.

Autologous connective tissue graft or xenogenic collagen matrix with coronally advanced flaps for coverage of multiple adjacent gingival recession. 36-month follow-up of a randomized multicentre trial

Maurizio S. Tonetti et al.

Summary: The 36-month follow-up of a trial comparing the use of xenogenic collagen matrix with connective tissue graft for treating multiple adjacent recessions showed no significant differences in root coverage or gingival margin position. These findings suggest that the xenogenic collagen matrix may not be non-inferior to the connective tissue graft in treating multiple adjacent recessions.

Gingival Phenotype Modification as a Result of Root Coverage Procedure with Two Human Dermal Matrices: Long-Term Assessment of a Randomized Clinical Trial

Shayan Barootchi et al.

Summary: The concept of gingival phenotype, comprising GT and KTW, has gained recognition in recent years. Autogenous grafts, while superior, have limitations leading to the development of graft substitutes like FDADM and SDADM. A 9-year trial showed maintenance of gingival phenotype modification and an apical shift in gingival margin level for both groups.
