Evaluation of an innovative new method for quantitation of plasma cells on CD138 immunohistochemistry

Ethan Gantana et al.

Summary: This study compared the concordance of the commonly used CD138 immunohistochemistry-based method and a proposed new method for plasma cell quantitation. The results showed that the new method had superior concordance at low plasma cell densities.

Automated digital enumeration of plasma cells in bone marrow trephine biopsies of multiple myeloma

Jacques A. J. Malherbe et al.

Summary: We developed an automated digital enumeration platform to assess plasma cell burden in multiple myeloma patients, and compared it with manual assessments. The results showed that automated digital enumeration can accurately determine plasma cell burden, regardless of the pattern and extent of the disease.

Evaluation of an open-source machine-learning tool to quantify bone marrow plasma cells

Katherina Baranova et al.

Summary: This study successfully developed and validated an open-source digital pathology tool, QuPath, for automatically quantifying CD138-positive bone marrow plasma cells. The tool showed high correlation with manual counting, especially for BMPC percentages <30%. The concordance between the NN classifier and pathologist estimates of BMPC percentage was also good.
