Qualitative study of guideline panelists: innovative surveys provided valuable insights regarding patient values and preferences

Linan Zeng et al.

Summary: This study explores guideline panelists' understanding of panel surveys in eliciting patient values and preferences, and their influence on making recommendations. The results show that most panelists found the survey easy to follow and that it helped incorporate patient values and preferences in the tradeoffs, enhancing the rationale behind the decisions.

Plasma Exchange for ANCA-Associated Vasculitis: An International Survey of Patient Preferences

David Collister et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate patient preferences for the use of plasma exchange in antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (AAV) and the tradeoffs between the risks of kidney failure and serious infection. The results showed that patients did not have consistent preferences for plasma exchange, highlighting the importance of shared decision making.

Defining decision thresholds for judgments on health benefits and harms using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) Evidence to Decision (EtD) frameworks: a protocol for a randomised methodological study (GRADE-THRESHOLD)

Gian Paolo Morgano et al.

Summary: This study aims to propose an approach to determine and use decision thresholds for assessing the magnitude of health benefits and harms. By involving various experts and validating the approach, it can differentiate between different judgment categories, support decision-making panels, and improve consistency and transparency in judgments.

Using explicit thresholds for benefits and harms in partially contextualized GRADE guidelines. Pilot experience from a living COVID-19 guideline

Ignacio Neumann et al.

Summary: The study piloted the use of thresholds in a Chilean COVID-19 living guideline and set different thresholds for each critical outcome, significantly impacting the development of recommendations. Explicit thresholds were valuable in judging the certainty of evidence, determining the direction and strength of recommendations, and assessing the need for updates.

Exploring approaches to identify, incorporate and report patient preferences in clinical guidelines: Qualitative interviews with guideline developers

Claire Kim et al.

Summary: The study explores how developers generate guidelines informed by patient preferences, finding that they often use patient panelists, focus groups, surveys, and other methods to identify preferences, but lack detail in specific processes. Recommendations include enhancing processes with patient training, supportive coordinators and chairs, and conducting research on how best to incorporate and report preferences.
