Disparities in unplanned surgery amongst medicare beneficiaries

Valeria S. M. Valbuena et al.

Summary: This study aimed to understand the disparities in surgical procedures performed in both elective and unplanned settings. The study found that among Medicare beneficiaries undergoing incisional hernia repair, colectomy, and abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, unplanned surgery rates were higher for Black and Asian beneficiaries compared to White beneficiaries. Additionally, unplanned procedures demonstrated wider disparities in outcomes, including higher mortality and readmission rates.

The Association of Socioeconomic Factors and Well-Differentiated Thyroid Cancer

Andrew Bonner et al.

Summary: This study found that patients who live at greater distances from health care institutions or have complicating socioeconomic barriers may present with more advanced diseases and have worse outcomes. Hispanic and Asian populations had higher odds of developing an advanced disease compared to the White population. Patients without insurance had higher odds of developing an advanced disease and worse survival outcomes compared to those with insurance.

Racial disparities in postmastectomy breast reconstruction following implementation of the affordable care act: A systematic review using a minority health and disparities research framework

Erin L. Doren et al.

Summary: This systematic review evaluates racial disparities in breast reconstruction for African American women after the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. The study found that breast reconstruction rates were 45.7% in white women and 38.5% in African American women. Implicit bias, communication barriers, and infrastructure were identified as the most promising strategies to achieve equitable access to breast reconstruction for African American women.

Socioeconomic and racial disparities in survival for patients with stage IV cancer

Kristen Jogerst et al.

Summary: This study found that disparities in cancer outcomes for minoritized people and groups experiencing disadvantages with Stage IV cancer are largely unknown. By using data from the National Cancer Database from 2004 to 2015, the study identified patients with Stage IV pancreatic, colorectal, lung, breast, and prostate cancer and analyzed the demographic factors and treatments received associated with overall survival. The results showed that survival for different cancer types is associated with socioeconomic status and self-reported racial classifications.

Summary: As the level of medical education indebtedness increases, physicians are turning to programs like PSLF and NHSC to manage their debt burden. This study analyzes the variations in participant groups and their impact on patient access to care. The findings suggest that while PSLF supports family physicians in public service, NHSC participants are more likely to work in underserved areas.

Trends in Cancer Mortality Among Black Individuals in the US From 1999 to 2019

Wayne R. Lawrence et al.

Summary: From 1999 to 2019, there were significant decreases in cancer death rates among Black individuals, but higher cancer death rates among Black men and women compared with other racial and ethnic groups persisted in 2019. Targeted interventions appear to be needed to eliminate social inequalities that contribute to Black individuals having higher cancer mortality.

Epigenetic Determinants of Racial Disparity in Breast Cancer: Looking beyond Genetic Alterations

Shriya Joshi et al.

Summary: Breast cancer incidence and mortality show significant disparities between African American and European American women, potentially mediated by gene-environment interactions through epigenetic modifications. Epigenetic changes may predispose AA women to cancer onset and aggressive disease course, suggesting the use of epigenetic profiles for early diagnosis.

Racial Disparities in the Use of Surgical Procedures in the US

Matthew J. Best et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the national rates of use for 9 major surgical procedures from 2012 to 2017 to determine whether national initiatives have improved racial disparities in the use of surgical procedures in the US. The results showed that racial disparities persisted for all analyzed procedures and worsened for one-third of them, regardless of US census division, hospital teaching status, or insurance status. Further efforts are needed to reduce these disparities and improve healthcare equality.
