Vitamin D and the Thyroid: A Critical Review of the Current Evidence

Mirjana Babic Leko et al.

Summary: Vitamin D is important for the normal functioning of organs, including the thyroid. Vitamin D deficiency is considered a risk factor for thyroid disorders, but the interaction between vitamin D and thyroid function is not fully understood. Studies comparing vitamin D status with thyroid function and the effect of vitamin D supplementation show inconsistent results, making it difficult to draw a definite conclusion. Additional studies with larger sample sizes are needed to fully understand the effect of vitamin D on thyroid function.

Impaired sensitivity to thyroid hormones is associated with hyperuricemia in a Chinese euthyroid population

Yingning Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between thyroid hormone sensitivity and uric acid metabolism in a Chinese population. The results showed that impaired thyroid hormone sensitivity was associated with elevated uric acid levels. This finding is important for understanding the role of thyroid hormone sensitivity in uric acid metabolism.

Mediation of BMI on 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Levels in US Adults with Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Consumption

Wei-Ting Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential mediating role of BMI in the association between SSB intake and 25(OH)D. The findings suggest that high total sugar intake from SSB and BMI independently contribute to lower 25(OH)D, and BMI mediates the inverse association between total sugar intake from SSB and 25(OH)D. Furthermore, an increased risk of having vitamin D deficiency was found in the population who consumed higher levels of sugar from SSB or soda drinks.

Mechanisms Linking Vitamin D Deficiency to Impaired Metabolism: An Overview

Nurulmuna Mohd Ghozali et al.

Summary: Vitamin D deficiency can lead to metabolic diseases such as obesity, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes mellitus. It impairs insulin secretion and beta-cell functions, exacerbates inflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis, resulting in insulin resistance and impaired glucose homeostasis.

Type 2 diabetes

Ehtasham Ahmad et al.

Summary: Type 2 diabetes accounts for nearly 90% of global diabetes cases, with an increasing number of affected individuals, particularly among young people. Early detection and proactive management are crucial for preventing complications and reducing mortality. Technology and precision medicine offer potential improvements to treatment outcomes but face significant barriers.

Role of Vitamin D in the Metabolic Syndrome

Lucia Melguizo-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The prevalence of hypovitaminosis D has been increasing in developed countries due to lifestyle changes and unhealthy habits. Scientific evidence shows an inverse relationship between vitamin D deficiency and metabolic syndrome (MetS), with supplementation helping improve outcomes in individuals with MetS. Maintaining optimal vitamin D concentrations is proposed as a preventive strategy against MetS.

Association of Vitamin D Levels, Race/Ethnicity, and Clinical Characteristics With COVID-19 Test Results

David O. Meltzer et al.

Summary: This study found that in Black individuals, the risk of COVID-19 positive results was 2.64 times higher with vitamin D levels of 30 to 39.9 ng/mL compared to levels of 40 ng/mL or higher, and decreased by 5% per 1-ng/mL increase in levels above 30 ng/mL. There were no significant associations of vitamin D levels with COVID-19 positivity rates in White individuals.

Maja Cvek et al.

Summary: Our study found no significant association between vitamin D and HT, but there may be a slight decrease in vitamin D levels associated with overt hypothyroidism. A significant correlation was identified between vitamin D and TSH in all HT patients, as well as a correlation between vitamin D and systolic blood pressure in OVERT HT patients.
