Dexmedetomidine for adult cardiac surgery: a systematic review, meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis

W. H. Poon et al.

Summary: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to analyze the effects of peri-operative dexmedetomidine in adults undergoing cardiac surgery. The results showed that dexmedetomidine reduced the durations of intensive care and tracheal intubation, and the incidence of postoperative delirium, atrial fibrillation, and short-term mortality.

The incidence, risk factors and outcomes of acute kidney injury in critically ill patients undergoing emergency surgery: a prospective observational study

Linhui Hu et al.

Summary: In a study of 383 critically ill patients undergoing emergency surgery, postoperative reoperation, postoperative APACHE II score, and postoperative serum lactic acid were identified as independent risk factors for postoperative AKI, with higher mortality rates and costs in the AKI group.

Comparative accuracy of biomarkers for the prediction of hospital-acquired acute kidney injury: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Heng-Chih Pan et al.

Summary: This study compared the predictive performance of different biomarkers for acute kidney injury (AKI). The biomarkers containing NGAL showed the best predictive accuracy for the occurrence of AKI, especially in medically treated patients. However, the predictive performance of urinary NGAL was limited in surgical patients, and urinary NGAL/creatinine seemed to be the most accurate biomarkers in these patients. All of the biomarkers had similar predictive performance in critically ill patients.

Impact of AKI care bundles on kidney and patient outcomes in hospitalized patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Hannah A. I. Schaubroeck et al.

Summary: The study found that implementing AKI care bundles in hospitalized patients can reduce the occurrence of moderate-severe AKI, especially in ICU settings. However, due to lack of data and heterogeneity in study design, firm conclusions about patient outcomes are difficult to draw. Compliance to AKI care bundles in hospitalized patients also shows high variability. Further research in targeted patient groups with complete and correct implementation of AKI care bundles is needed.
