Automobile recycling for remanufacturing in China: A systematic review on recycling legislations, models and methods

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: Compared with recycling scrapped automobile materials, remanufacturing is a more beneficial circular economy model. However, China's scrapped automobiles remanufacturing industry is facing the challenge of low recycling rate. Through reviewing peer-reviewed papers, we identified the challenges and proposed a method system to promote recycling, including classification of recycling models and key methods. This work provides insights at both micro and macro levels for researchers to create an empirical study framework.

Environmental benefits of remanufacturing mechanical products: a harmonized meta-analysis of comparative life cycle assessment studies

Shitong Peng et al.

Summary: This paper critically evaluates the environmental performance of remanufactured products compared to new ones. By adjusting comparison results, it was found that remanufactured mechanical products can significantly reduce global warming potential (GWP), with an average of 28.5% and 25.9% reduction in GWP and primary energy consumption (PEC) respectively, compared to new counterparts.

Collaborative reverse logistics network for electric vehicle batteries management from sustainable perspective

Gui Hu Wenzhu Liao et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the reverse logistics issue of waste electric vehicle batteries (WEVBs). From the perspective of circular economy and environmental protection, a multi-participants-based reverse logistics network is designed, and a fuzzy optimization model is proposed to determine the number and location of facilities in the network, aiming to achieve cost reduction, profit increasement and efficiency improvement.

Combining Life Cycle Assessment and Circularity Assessment to Analyze Environmental Impacts of the Medical Remanufacturing of Electrophysiology Catheters

Anna Schulte et al.

Summary: The remanufacturing of medical products, such as electrophysiology catheters, is seen as having great potential for sustainability. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is commonly used to evaluate the environmental impact of remanufactured products, but a system perspective is needed for decision-making. This study found that using remanufactured catheters can significantly reduce global warming impact and abiotic resource use compared to newly-manufactured catheters.

Evaluating environmental impacts and economic performance of remanufacturing electric vehicle lithium-ion batteries

Meihan Yu et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the environmental and economic impacts of remanufacturing LIBs in China, the largest EV producer. Results show that remanufacturing LIBs can significantly reduce GHG emissions, water consumption and production costs, with DPR method showing the most potential. Sensitivity analysis suggests large profit margins for remanufacturing LIBs. Potential water-carbon conflicts in developing LIB remanufacturing industry should be considered for future industry planning.

Reuse assessment of WEEE: Systematic review of emerging themes and research directions

Gurunathan Anandh et al.

Summary: Through a systematic literature review on the assessment of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) reuse, this study identified major research themes such as consumer behavior, reuse potential, product recovery strategy, and material flow analysis. The study also highlighted the need for further research on informal WEEE management in developing countries, the impact of government subsidies on WEEE management, and product service systems in the circular economy. In addition, mobile phones and computers were found to be extensively studied for WEEE reuse assessment, with potential future research areas focusing on environmental impacts, legal aspects, and policy implications.
