Photocatalytic mechanisms and photocatalyst deactivation during the degradation of 5-fluorouracil in water

Luxin Ren et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photocatalytic transformation pathways of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and the inhibition mechanisms of its degradation efficiency reduction using TiO2 supported on nickel foam (TiO2/NF) as the photo-catalyst and pharmaceutical micropollutant. The produced intermediates during the photocatalytic degradation of 5-FU were identified as mono/polyhydroxylated compounds, short-chain oxides, and carboxylation ones. The inhibition of 5-FU degradation was found to be attributed to the competition for hydroxyl radical (center dot OH) and the preferential consumption of center dot OH in the TiO2 diffusion layer by the intermediates.

Removal of Contaminants of Emerging Concern from a Wastewater Effluent by Solar-Driven Heterogeneous Photocatalysis: A Case Study of Pharmaceuticals

Gabriel Perez-Lucas et al.

Summary: The presence of emerging micropollutants in the environment has become a significant threat to human health and aquatic ecosystems. These micropollutants, including pharmaceuticals and pesticides, enter the environment through human activities and can be found in various water sources. Conventional wastewater treatment plants are not effective in removing a large portion of these pollutants, particularly pharmaceuticals, leading to continuous contamination of freshwater systems. In this study, the effectiveness of TiO2 as a photocatalyst combined with Na2S2O8 as an oxidant was evaluated for the treatment of wastewater effluent contaminated with pharmaceutical residues. The results showed that this solar heterogeneous photocatalysis method significantly enhanced the removal of pharmaceuticals from the wastewater effluent. However, the presence of dissolved salts and organic carbon in the wastewater effluent slowed down the degradation process. The study also found that macrolides had the longest degradation time in wastewater effluent compared to other compounds studied. This methodology is particularly relevant in water-scarce areas with abundant sunlight, such as the southeast of Spain.

A Snapshot on the Occurrence and Risk Assessment of Organic Pollutants in an Urban River

Moises Canle et al.

Summary: A snapshot screening was conducted in an urban river to evaluate the presence and environmental risk of certain contaminants in the water and sediments. The most commonly detected contaminants were bisphenol A (BPA) and caffeine. The overall environmental risk, considering all the screened compounds together, was found to be significant. The results are discussed in relation to available literature data, and a four-color alert system is included to inform about the risk levels of specific contaminants.

Cellulose mineralization with in-situ synthesized amorphous titanium dioxide for enhanced adsorption and auto-accelerating photocatalysis on water pollutant

Jin-Long Zhu et al.

Summary: A method of in-situ mineralization based on a homogeneous system was proposed to directly construct amorphous TiO2 into cellulose hydrogel network as a crosslinker for efficient and safe wastewater treatment. This unique structure not only endowed the TiO2/cellulose microsphere with high adsorption capacity on methylene blue, but also made it reusable due to its pH sensitive adsorption capacity. Moreover, the cellulose mineralization provided a new perspective for the design of hydrogel immobilized catalyst system with high dispersion and active site exposure for efficient and safe water treatment.

Optimization of P25/PDMS supported catalysts preparation for the photocatalytic oxidation of parabens

Maria Joao Silva et al.

Summary: Heterogenous photocatalysis is an effective technology for removing emerging contaminants of concern from wastewater, but powder photocatalysts require expensive and time-consuming separation processes. This study focused on developing a supported photocatalyst by immobilizing commercial TiO2 (P25) powder in PDMS membranes and optimizing the plasma process conditions. The prepared membranes achieved high removal efficiencies of parabens under UV irradiation, with EP, MP, and PP removals of 53±2%, 53±0%, and 58±2%, respectively, when P25 was on the surface. This research successfully developed a protocol to produce hydrophilic and photocatalytic P25/PDMS membranes for efficient paraben removal.

Identification of Active Species in Photodegradation of Aqueous Imidacloprid over g-C3N4/TiO2 Nanocomposites

Thawanrat Kobkeatthawin et al.

Summary: g-C3N4/TiO2 composites were fabricated through a hydrothermal method for the efficient photocatalytic degradation of imidacloprid pesticide. Among the composites, the 0.5CNS/TiO2 material showed the highest photocatalytic activity, with a 93% removal efficiency of IMI. The high photocatalytic activity of the composites was attributed to the reduction of band gap energy and suppression of charge carrier recombination on the surfaces of both TiO2 and CNS.

Comparison of the heterogeneous photocatalysis of imidacloprid and thiacloprid - reaction mechanism, ecotoxicity, and the effect of matrices

Mate Nafradi et al.

Summary: This comparative study investigated the heterogeneous photocatalytic degradation of two neonicotinoids, revealing differences in transformation and mineralization influenced by various additives, matrices, and inorganic components. The role of (OH)-O-center dot and direct charge transfer in transformation was highlighted, with implications for ecotoxicity changes and the formation of hardly oxidizable intermediates. Fluorination of TiO2 had no significant impact on transformation rates but altered product distribution, enhanced dechlorination, and hindered mineralization. The negative effects of tap water and biologically treated domestic wastewater were significant, suggesting a complex interaction between matrices and radical scavenging capacity.

Mechanical Stability Is Key for Large-Scale Implementation of Photocatalytic Surface-Attached Film Technologies in Water Treatment

D. R. Ramos et al.

Summary: The use of chemical-free, sunlight-driven photocatalytic units to replace traditional tertiary water treatment is often suggested. Photocatalysts are required to be cost-effective, inert, chemically stable, reusable, and easy to separate with mechanical stability. Studies have investigated how mechanical stress affects the photoactive TiO2 layer and its effectiveness in degrading phenol during photocatalytic water treatment. Various methods have been used to coat spherical glass beads with the photocatalyst TiO2, and the physicochemical characteristics of the coated beads were analyzed. The catalytic activity of the coated glass beads varied depending on the method of coating and calcination temperature, with LPD-coated glass beads generally displaying higher catalytic activity.
