Environmental outcomes of the US Renewable Fuel Standard

Tyler J. Lark et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the realized effects of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) in the United States through econometric analyses, land use observations, and biophysical models. The findings show that the RFS policy increased corn and crop prices, expanded corn cultivation and cropland, raised fertilizer use and water quality degradants, and resulted in higher carbon intensity of corn ethanol compared to gasoline. These tradeoffs need to be considered when making decisions about renewable energy policies and the role of corn ethanol in climate mitigation goals.

On quantifying sources of uncertainty in the carbon footprint of biofuels: crop/feedstock, LCA modelling approach, land-use change, and GHG metrics

Miguel Brandao et al.

Summary: Biofuel systems have the potential to combat climate change, but there is uncertainty in estimating their climate change impacts. Crop/feedstock choice, land-use change consideration, and LCA modelling approach significantly affect the estimated climate footprint of biofuels.

CHANGES IN GLOBAL LAND USE AND CO2 EMISSIONS FROM US BIOETHANOL PRODUCTION: WHAT DRIVES DIFFERENCES IN ESTIMATES BETWEEN CORN AND CELLULOSIC ETHANOL?

Bryan K. Mignone et al.

Summary: Land use change CO2 emissions associated with bioenergy production depend on factors such as the amount of land required, carbon stored in crops, and carbon emitted during land displacement. This study explores the differences in estimates of CO2 emissions for two bioenergy crops (corn and switchgrass) used to produce ethanol in the US, based on different assumptions about natural lands protection. The results provide insights for future energy system scenarios and life cycle assessment of biofuels.

Life cycle and economic assessment of corn production practices in the western US Corn Belt

Shaobin Li et al.

Summary: The environmental and economic impacts of corn production vary with geographical regions, water sources, and corn seed hybrids. Improving energy efficiency of diesel irrigation pumps is crucial for reducing GHGs and environmental impacts. Among all practices, fossil fuel depletion has the largest contribution to the overall results.

Sustainability assessment of alternative jet fuel for the US Department of Defense

Colin M. Beal et al.

Summary: The U.S. Department of Defense is considering replacing petroleum jet fuel consumed domestically with alternative jet fuels to enhance sustainability and reduce vulnerability to price fluctuations. Nine alternative jet fuel pathways were evaluated for cost, greenhouse gas emissions, energy balance, land, water, and fertilizer impacts. Domestic biomass feedstocks were found to be feasible, with the forestry residue and waste oil pathways showing the lowest costs and emissions.

Land use leverage points to reduce GHG emissions in US agricultural supply chains

Rylie E. O. Pelton et al.

Summary: Recognizing the significant threats posed by climate change to agricultural supply chains, companies globally are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Recent advancements in modeling have improved transparency in meat and ethanol industry supply chains, linking production practices and environmental impacts to downstream demand. Understanding spatially explicit hotspots in production impacts and land use changes is crucial for effective mitigation efforts and policies.
