Measuring raw-material criticality of product systems through an economic product importance indicator: a case study of battery-electric vehicles

Hauke Lutkehaus et al.

Summary: The concept of criticality assesses the probability and impacts of raw-material shortages, being integrated into life cycle sustainability assessment. A new parameter called Economic Product Importance (EPI) is introduced for evaluating product-specific raw material relevance, vulnerability, and overall criticality. The EPI method allows for a more accurate assessment of raw-material criticality within the LCSA framework.

Life cycle assessment of natural graphite production for lithium-ion battery anodes based on industrial primary data

Philipp Engels et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the issue of greenhouse gas emissions in the production of battery materials, specifically graphite for lithium-ion batteries. It highlights the lack of transparency and scarcity of primary data on this topic and the importance of such data for evaluating the environmental impact of batteries for electric vehicles and developing decarbonization strategies. By providing transparent primary data from a Chinese graphite producer and conducting a life cycle assessment, the paper reveals the significant global warming potential of natural graphite anode material production and the disparity with reported data in existing databases.

Life cycle assessment of recycled NiCoMn ternary cathode materials prepared by hydrometallurgical technology for power batteries in China

Shiwei Du et al.

Summary: This study presents a life cycle assessment of recycled NCM ternary cathode materials produced from spent batteries in China. The results show that the environmental impacts of the leaching and extraction process can be effectively reduced through process optimization. The production of recycled NCM materials consumes less energy and has reduced environmental impact compared to virgin NCM materials.

Integrating life cycle assessment and multi criteria decision making for sustainable waste management: Key issues and recommendations for future studies

Ali Ebadi Torkayesh et al.

Summary: Decisions on waste management systems need to consider multiple sustainability criteria. However, there is a limited number of studies that integrate life cycle assessment (LCA) and multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) to evaluate the sustainability of waste management systems. Additionally, there is a lack of detailed information and clarity in the studies regarding the life cycle inventory and the methods used for converting environmental impact categories.

Comparison of Electric Vehicle Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Allocation Methods

Shiwei Du et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of different allocation methods on the environmental performance assessment of power lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) during production and recycling processes. It finds that the choice of allocation method significantly affects the results and suggests a need to revisit previous studies comparing battery types. Qualitative analysis based on product and process characteristics is conducted to compare the applicability of allocation methods to LIB recycling. The study recommends considering the characteristics of different methods and recommending specific allocation methods for standardized assessments in the LCA community.

Life cycle assessment of lithium-ion battery recycling using pyrometallurgical technologies

Mohammad Ali Rajaeifar et al.

Summary: This study analyzed and compared three pyrometallurgical technologies for recycling spent lithium-ion batteries in terms of global warming potential and cumulative energy demand. Results show that shifting to DC plasma technology could significantly reduce the environmental impacts. Factors such as metal recovery rates and energy intensity of the electricity grid affect the results, but the best option remains the same.
