A plant-wide model describing GHG emissions and nutrient recovery options for water resource recovery facilities

Borja Solis et al.

Summary: In this study, a plant-wide model was used to describe the fate of C, N, and P compounds, considering greenhouse gas emissions. Novel strategies, such as cascade controller combination and struvite precipitation, were implemented to achieve high plant performance, nutrient recovery, and greenhouse gas emission reduction.

Exploring GHG emissions in the mainstream SCEPPHAR configuration wastewater resource

Borja Solis et al.

Summary: The wastewater sector is shifting towards resource recovery and there is increasing concern for sustainability during operation. This study assesses the emissions of nitrous oxide and methane during the long-term operation of a novel wastewater resource recovery facility and discusses their dynamics and possible sources. The results show that intermittent aeration is the most effective strategy to mitigate nitrous oxide emissions.

Achieving robust mainstream nitrite shunt at pilot-scale with integrated sidestream sludge treatment and step-feed

Haoran Duan et al.

Summary: This study successfully achieved stable mainstream nitrite shunt through two strategies: sidestream sludge treatment and step-feed. The results showed that when sidestream sludge treatment was conducted alone, nitrite-oxidising bacteria quickly developed resistance, leading to instability. However, when sidestream sludge treatment was integrated with a step-feed strategy, stable nitrite shunt was maintained for over a year.

Effective N2O emission control during the nitritation/denitritation treatment of ammonia rich wastewater

Xin Zou et al.

Summary: This study effectively suppressed N2O emissions in the treatment of ammonia rich wastewater by altering the frequency of aerobic/anoxic phases. Increasing the number of aerobic phases resulted in a significant reduction of N2O emissions. Aerobic phases contributed more to the total N2O emissions compared to anoxic phases. Furthermore, N2O emissions were positively correlated with nitrite accumulation and negatively correlated with the nosZ/(nirK+nirS) gene ratio.

Effect of COD/N ratios and DO concentrations on the NOB suppression in a multi-cycle SBR

Guangjing Xu et al.

Summary: The study found a significant relationship among COD/N ratio, nitrite accumulate rate, and total nitrogen removal efficiency, while there was no correlation between DO concentration and nitrite accumulate rate or total nitrogen removal efficiency. The main reason for NOB suppression was nitrite competition between denitrifiers and NOB, rather than oxygen competition between AOB and NOB.
