Performance and mechanism of Chlorella in swine wastewater treatment: Roles of nitrogen-phosphorus ratio adjustment and indigenous bacteria

Xiao-Ya Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of adjusting the nitrogen-phosphorus ratio and indigenous bacteria on Chlorella treatment of swine wastewater, revealing that the optimal N/P ratio was 20 and the participation of indigenous bacteria can enhance the removal efficiency of total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and chemical oxygen demand.

Physiological Effects of Exposure to Copper and Chromium in Three Floating Aquatic Macrophyte Species

Debora Cristina de Souza et al.

Summary: The resistance of plants to heavy metals involves different ecotypes and intracellular strategies for prevention, tolerance, and detoxification. This study focused on the physiological effects of copper and chromium exposure in three plant species. Results showed Eichhornia crassipes had an efficient defense system against copper and could accumulate chromium in roots, while Salvinia biloba and Pistia stratiotes accumulated and transported metals but lacked a defense mechanism and entered senescence.

Removal effects of different emergent-aquatic-plant groups on Cu, Zn, and Cd compound pollution from simulated swine wastewater

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the efficiency of seven emergent-aquatic-plant species in removing heavy metals from simulated swine wastewater. The combination of Sagittaria latifolia, Iris sibirica, and Pontederia cordata showed the highest removal efficiency for Cu, Zn, and Cd at day 45. The dry weight of roots, water NH4+-N, temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen were found to influence the heavy metal removal process.

Bacterial community response to different nitrogen gradients of swine wastewater in surface flow constructed wetlands

Xi Li et al.

Summary: This study found that different nitrogen concentrations significantly impact the diversity and composition of bacteria in sediment, with high nitrogen concentration leading to an increase in Ace and Chao1 indexes but a decrease in Shannon index, while low nitrogen concentration leads to an increase in Shannon index as nitrogen concentration increases.

Water contamination with atrazine: is nitric oxide able to improve Pistia stratiotes phytoremediation capacity?

Lorena A. J. Vieira et al.

Summary: Atrazine is a widely used herbicide that leaves residues in water bodies, posing environmental threats. The study found that nitric oxide can enhance plant tolerance to atrazine, leading to improved pollutant uptake and translocation, thus enhancing the efficiency of phytoremediation in removing contaminants from the environment.

Phosphate hinders the complexation of dissolved organic matter with copper in lake waters

Xiang Ding et al.

Summary: The study found that phosphate can restrict the ability of heavy metals to bind with dissolved organic matter in lakes, thereby reducing the risk of heavy metal poisoning in aquatic organisms.
