Assessing coupling interactions in a safe and just operating space for regional sustainability

Dongni Han et al.

Summary: Human activities have had an unprecedented impact on the Earth System, leading to irreversible degradation. The United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals provide a global action plan, but achieving regional sustainability within social-environmental constraints remains a challenge. The authors propose a framework that integrates safe and just operating space with the SDGs to assess regional sustainability and develop targeted strategies for sustainable development across scales. Despite China's incomplete achievement of sustainable development, significant improvements have been observed in most provinces.

Global trends in vegetation fractional cover: Hotspots for change in bare soil and non-photosynthetic vegetation

Michael J. Hill et al.

Summary: Vegetation Fractional Cover (VFC) is an important indicator of terrestrial surface condition, with dynamics of bare soil (BS), non-photosynthetic vegetation (NPV), and photosynthetic vegetation (PV) fractions revealing global land use management trends. Negative trends in BS could lead to risks of soil erosion, habitat change, and reduction in ecosystem health.

Spatial-temporal variation and nonlinear prediction of environmental footprints and comprehensive environmental pressure in urban agglomerations

Yizhong Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the water-carbon-ecological footprints and a nonlinear grey Bernoulli projection model were used to evaluate the comprehensive environmental pressure in the urban agglomerations of Cheng-Yu district, the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, and the Yangtze River Delta. The results showed that these regions experienced ecological deficit and an increase in comprehensive environmental pressure. The coupling coordination degree of environmental footprints was improved in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and the Yangtze River Delta, but not in the urban agglomerations of Cheng-Yu district.

Tomatoes from the desert: Environmental footprints and sustainability potential in a changing world

Sharon Ravitz Wyngaard et al.

Summary: The growing demand for food worldwide, limited resources, and accelerating environmental changes suggest that future global food security may depend on unconventional land and production systems. This study analyzes the environmental footprints of a tomato production system in passive greenhouses. The results show that the main environmental hotspots are water production, fossil energy, fertilizers, structures, and road transport, as well as specific factors such as soil, evaporation, location, and the human factor. Additionally, there is no correlation between farm yields and materials inputs or carbon footprint.

Integrating ecosystem services modeling into effectiveness assessment of national protected areas in a typical arid region in China

Suxiao Li et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the supply of six ecosystem services (ESs) by landscapes in Xinjiang, China, revealing spatial heterogeneity and coverage differences in ES hotspots. Over 50% of ES hotspots were located within Protected Areas (PAs), indicating moderate outcomes in preserving ESs and biodiversity, yet conservation gaps exist. Substantial differences were found in ES supply by different PAs, highlighting the need for a shift towards broader goals encompassing multiple ESs for human well-being.

Identifying regional drivers of future land-based biodiversity footprints

Sandra G. Marquardt et al.

Summary: The study shows that global land-based biodiversity impact remains below the boundary in most scenario-year combinations, but in 2100, per capita boundaries are exceeded in some regions, indicating significant differences in the impact of final consumption on biodiversity among regions and scenarios. Regional-specific strategies should be adopted to promote environmental protection and reduce biodiversity loss.

Aridity-driven shift in biodiversity-soil multifunctionality relationships

Weigang Hu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the influence of plant and soil microbial diversity on soil multifunctionality varies with climate conditions. In arid regions, soil microbial diversity, particularly fungi, becomes more important in regulating multifunctionality.

Drivers and impacts of changes in China's drylands

Changjia Li et al.

Summary: Global drylands, including China, are at risk of desertification due to anthropogenic climate change and human activities. Large-scale restoration and conservation programmes have shown positive effects in improving land quality and vegetation cover in some dryland areas in China, but challenges still remain in managing and mitigating desertification.
