Selecting proper sites for underground dam construction using Multi-Attribute Utility Theory in arid and semi-arid regions

Mohammad Hassan Sadeghiravesh et al.

Summary: This study presented a new method for selecting suitable sites for underground dam construction using geographic information systems techniques and decision-making processes. Exclusionary criteria were used to omit inappropriate regions and appropriate sites were prioritized using the Multi-Attribute Utility Theory. Seven sites were selected based on all criteria and experts' opinions, with Nazarabad dam site being the best location for underground dam construction. This study proposed a new approach for constructing subsurface dams at the proper site, aiding in achieving sustainable water resources with limited facilities and capital.

Sustainable resilient recycling partner selection for urban waste management: Consolidating perspectives of decision-makers and experts

Gholamreza Haseli et al.

Summary: In sustainable waste supply chains, selecting recycling partners is crucial. A framework that considers both sustainability and resilience factors is developed to improve the decision-making process. Multi-criteria decision-making methods are useful tools, but the capability to support efficient group decision-making has been a disadvantage. Therefore, a novel approach using ZE-numbers and a combined compromise solution is proposed.

Prioritizing selection criteria of distributed circular water systems: A fuzzy based multi-criteria decision-making approach

Yu-Chen Lee et al.

Summary: Extreme weather, population growth, and industrial activities contribute to the global water crisis. The traditional linear water management model is unsustainable environmentally and economically. The circular economy proposes a paradigm shift in urban water systems by closing the water loop. Compared to centralized systems, distributed water systems offer flexibility and resilience in preparing for unexpected stressors.

Underground dam site selection using hydrological modelling and analytic network process

Ali Talebi et al.

Summary: This study aims to determine the best location for underground dam construction using hydrologic and network process models. Seventeen suitable locations were selected based on criteria such as ground slope, land use, geology, and hydrology. Subsurface flows were calculated using a hydrologic model and ranking was done using an Analytic Network Process. The results demonstrate the usefulness of combining these models for selecting and ranking sites for underground dam construction.

Gis-multi criteria decision analysis-based land suitability assessment for dam site selection

C. B. Karakus et al.

Summary: This study used Geographic Information System (GIS) and the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method to determine the most suitable dam sites in Sivas province, Turkey. The results showed that most of the existing dams were in the high and medium level of suitability, while the planned dams were mainly in the low suitability class. The suitability mapping obtained from this study is an essential tool for decision makers in regional water resources management and sustainable development.

Yayu Gao et al.

Summary: This study developed a water-saving-ecological check dam site optimization model (WCSOM) in order to determine potential check dam construction sites and maximize water resource, ecosystem, and socioeconomic benefits. The model results showed that ecological and water-saving factors were the most important, and water source conservation, flood prevention capacity, and check dam control area were the top three influencing elements.

Small dams/reservoirs site location analysis in a semi-arid region of Mozambique

Antonio dos Anjos Luis et al.

Summary: Using GIS and AHP method, this study identified the most suitable locations for small dams/reservoirs in the Tete province region of Mozambique. Results showed that most abandoned small dams/reservoirs were in areas classified as modestly suitable, while currently operating and planned dams/reservoirs were mainly located in similar areas, indicating that construction decisions may not have fully considered suitability factors.
