Income and racial disparities in financial returns from solar PV deployment

Christine L. Crago et al.

Summary: Transitioning the U.S. energy system towards renewable sources of energy, particularly solar photovoltaic (PV) technology, is crucial for reducing global CO2 emissions. However, the financial returns of solar PV adoption differ significantly depending on system ownership status (leased or owned) and the demographic characteristics of the neighborhood. Policy makers should consider these disparities in financial returns when designing solar adoption programs to prioritize equity in the energy transition, especially for low-income and non-White communities.

A state-of-the-art review of CO2 enhanced oil recovery as a promising technology to achieve carbon neutrality in China

Shanxue Jiang et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the role of CO2 enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in accelerating carbon neutrality in China, providing a comprehensive analysis of the strategies to achieve carbon neutrality and the potential of CO2-EOR as a promising technology. The data analysis shows that both reduction in carbon emissions and increase in carbon sequestration are necessary to achieve carbon neutrality. However, critical issues such as technical challenges, leakage and safety concerns, cost issues, and policy considerations need to be addressed in order to make CO2-EOR a reliable and favorable technology.

Distributed scheduling of HVACs based on transactive energy and ADMM

Meng Song et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the optimal scheduling of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems (HVACs) to address the fluctuation problems caused by the increasing renewable energy integration with power systems. A two-stage framework is proposed to schedule HVACs, where a federated power plant (FPP) is employed to regulate HVACs in the first stage and a transactive energy (TE) market is built within FPP to schedule HVACs in the second stage. The alternating direction method of multiplier (ADMM) method is utilized to control HVACs in a distributed way for better-optimized scheduling. Case studies show that the proposed distributed methodology can schedule HVACs in a private, effective and accurate way.

Impact of climate change on nearly zero-energy dwelling in temperate climate: Time-integrated discomfort, HVAC energy performance, and GHG emissions

Ramin Rahif et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of climate change on a nearly zero-energy dwelling in Brussels. It finds that overheating risk will increase while overcooling risk will decrease by the end of the century. Additionally, the study shows that a reversible air-to-water heat pump strategy has lower HVAC primary energy use and greenhouse gas emissions compared to a gas-fired boiler + air conditioner strategy.
