Enzymatic post-consumer poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) depolymerization using commercial enzymes

Rodrigo Brackmann et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation of post-consumer PET using five commercial hydrolase enzymes. Humicola insolens cutinase (HiC) was found to be the most active enzyme. The concentration and ratio of hydrolysis products varied significantly with reaction temperature. The enzymatic PET hydrolysis by HiC was sensitive to enzyme concentration, with a maximum achieved at 40-50 vol% of HiC. These findings contribute to optimizing enzyme-based PET recycling technologies.

Carbon dioxide-mediated thermochemical conversion of banner waste using cobalt oxide catalyst as a strategy for plastic waste treatment

Nahyeon Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of CO2 thermochemical agent and a metal oxide catalyst (Co3O4) on thermochemical banner waste conversion. The results showed that CO2 conversion yielded more non-condensable gases and increased CO and CH4 yields compared to non-catalytic conversion. The use of CO2 and Co3O4 reduced the yields of condensables and decomposition residue. Co3O4 promoted decarboxylation under N-2 and methanation and water-gas shift reaction under CO2. The simultaneous use of CO2 and Co3O4 minimized the formation of char and wax. The findings highlight the importance of CO2 and Co3O4 in plastic waste upcycling, specifically banner waste.

A circular economy framework for plastics: A semi-systematic review

Sarah King et al.

Summary: Plastic is a versatile material, but limited recycling leads to environmental issues. Research on circular economy for plastics often focuses on end of life, while solutions can be found earlier in the supply chain. This study provides a comprehensive review of literature on plastics in circular economy, identifying key areas and trends. The data validates a framework that can aid research, industry, and policy in transitioning to a circular economy for plastics.

Energy recovery from banner waste through catalytic pyrolysis over cobalt oxide: Effects of catalyst configuration

Chanyeong Park et al.

Summary: This study explores the effects of Co3O4 catalyst configuration on the characteristics and energy contents of pyrolytic products of banner waste. In situ configuration enhances thermal cracking and increases yields of gas and liquid pyrolyzates, while reducing solid residue. The Co3O4 catalyst promotes decarboxylation and suppresses decarbonylation. In situ configuration also leads to higher heating values for pyrolytic liquid and char compared to ex situ configuration.

Upcycling of abandoned banner via thermocatalytic process over a MnFeCoNiCu high-entropy alloy catalyst

Chanyeong Park et al.

Summary: This study investigates the application of a high-entropy alloy catalyst in the thermocatalytic conversion of plastic waste. The results show that the catalyst increases the yield of gas and liquid products, suppresses the formation of byproducts, and enhances the production of valuable chemicals. These findings suggest the potential of developing a new thermocatalytic process for recovering value-added chemicals from plastic waste.

Hydrolytic Depolymerization of Polyethylene Terephthalate by Reactive Extrusion

T. Yalcinyuva et al.

Summary: Continuous hydrolytic depolymerization of PET resin was carried out in a co-rotating twin screw extruder at high temperature and pressure. The injection of saturated steam at high pressure achieved hydrolysis. Optimal conditions were found at low screw speeds and water/PET ratios. Depolymerization rates were high, resulting in low molecular weight products, as supported by a simple kinetic model.
