Influence of size effect on the properties of slag and waste glass-based geopolymer paste

Xi Jiang et al.

Summary: A large amount of solid waste is produced due to population growth, and solid waste-based geopolymer has potential as a green alternative to reduce CO2 emissions. This study investigated the effects of sample size on the physical properties and micro-characteristics of waste glass powder and ground blast furnace slag-based geopolymer pastes. The results showed that sample size significantly influenced compressive strength and microstructural properties, with smaller-sized specimens exhibiting higher reaction degree. Higher curing temperature and humidity were found to improve mechanical performance. Analysis of coring and cutting samples revealed alkaline concentration gradient and precipitation of alkali reagents in larger-sized geopolymer samples. Moisture distribution played a vital role in the geopolymerization process at different reaction stages.

Sustainable crumb rubber modified asphalt mixtures based on low-temperature crack propagation characteristics using the response surface methodology

Sepehr Ghafari et al.

Summary: The fracture regime of asphalt concrete is crucial for the design of optimized mixtures against low-temperature cracking. This research focused on quantifying the crack propagation regime of mixtures incorporating ground recycled waste tire using fracture resistance curve concept. Through experimental testing and statistical analysis, an optimal mix design with 4.74% binder content and 19.5% crumb rubber incorporation was determined, considering maximum fracture response, minimized cost, and environmental concerns in low temperatures.

Leaching and mechanical performance of rubberized warm mix asphalt modified through the chemical treatment of hazardous waste materials

Alireza Mahpour et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the two main distresses of rutting and moisture damage in warm mix asphalt (WMA) by using crumb rubber as a major additive. Treated waste polyethylene and waste engine oil are used to achieve the reasonable production temperature of rubberized WMA. The results show that the biphasic problem of rubberized bitumen and WMA distresses can be solved through this mixture modifications, with the added advantages of reduced bitumen consumption and production temperature. Additionally, the assessment of leaching indicates that the long-term environmental impact of hazardous materials in WMA is negligible.

Influence of waste glass powder as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) on physical and mechanical properties of cement paste under high temperatures

Xi Jiang et al.

Summary: The effect of using waste glass powder (WGP) as a supplementary material for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) paste specimens was experimentally studied. The addition of WGP improved workability but prolonged the setting time of the OPC paste. It also reduced the degradation of the OPC matrix under high temperatures and mitigated the potential alkaline aggregate reaction (ASR) effect.

Summary: The effect of freeze-thaw cycles on the pavement performance of SBS modified asphalt mixture and SBS/crumb rubber composite modified asphalt mixture was studied. The results showed that the pavement performance worsens after the freeze-thaw cycles, and the influence of a salt freeze-thaw cycles is greater than that of a water freeze-thaw cycles.

Summary: Recycled aggregates have shown advantages in terms of both environmental and economic impacts in concrete production. By using the life cycle assessment methodology, the impacts of different aggregates can be compared, and the best solutions can be identified. According to the literature review, shorter transport distances and the use of recycled aggregates are associated with better environmental results, and recycled aggregates are also associated with lower costs.

RSM-based evaluation of mechanical and durability properties of recycled aggregate concrete containing GGBFS and silica fume

Alireza Habibi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the mechanical properties and durability of Recycled Aggregate Concrete (RAC) containing GGBFS and Silica Fume (SF) using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The results showed that Recycled Aggregate (RA) had a negative effect on the durability properties of concrete at 7 and 28 days, but not at 90 days. Optimal mix designs were obtained based on two specific scenarios to address environmental issues related to concrete production.
