Use of black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens L.) larvae meal in aquafeeds for a sustainable aquaculture industry: A review of past and future needs

Kannan Mohan et al.

Summary: The aquaculture industry is rapidly growing and in need of alternative protein sources due to cost and environmental concerns. Black soldier fly larvae meal is recognized as a potential substitution for fish meal in aquafeeds. This review evaluates the role, production, and challenges of black soldier fly larvae meal in aquaculture.

Environmental sustainability and footprints of global aquaculture

Qutu Jiang et al.

Summary: The sustainability of global aquaculture is low, with concerns over resource overexploitation and environmental impacts. China, India, and Indonesia are the main contributors to water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in global aquaculture.

The underestimated importance of fertilizer in aquacultural phosphorus budget: Case of Chinese mitten crab

Xin Liu et al.

Summary: China's heavy reliance on aquaculture to meet the growing demand for animal protein has led to low phosphorus use efficiency. Using life cycle assessment and substance flow analysis, this study developed a phosphorus flow model for Chinese mitten crab culture, revealing that the highest phosphorus input occurs during adult crab cultivation, and a significant portion accumulates in sediment.

Life cycle assessment of aquaculture systems: Does burden shifting occur with an increase in production intensity?

Ramin Ghamkhar et al.

Summary: The study reviewed 18 LCA studies on various aquaculture systems and highlighted the shift from extensive to intensive systems resulting in potential global impacts. Feed was found to have the largest impact on land use, while intensive recirculating systems were more efficient in water use compared to extensive systems. Future research is needed to incorporate indirect and consumptive water use in LCA studies for aquaculture systems optimization.

Sustainable aquaculture and animal feed from microalgae-Nutritive value and techno-functional components

Dillirani Nagarajan et al.

Summary: Microalgae are promoted as a sustainable feed option with high nutritional quality, utilized in biofuel production and bioremediation. They offer advantages of protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals, but quality assessments such as digestibility, bioavailability, and toxicity must be considered. Their utilization in animal husbandry and aquaculture sectors, along with potential future research prospects, are highlighted.

The scarcity-weighted water footprint provides unreliable water sustainability scoring

Davy Vanham et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of scarcity-weighted water footprint indicators on global irrigated wheat production and found that it may not accurately assess the sustainability of water resources and may have adverse effects on farmers producing wheat sustainably.

The Feasibility of Using Yellow Mealworms (Tenebrio molitor): Towards a Sustainable Aquafeed Industry

Laiba Shafique et al.

Summary: The sustainable development of the aquaculture industry relies on finding alternative ingredients for aquafeed, with yellow mealworms showing potential as a protein source. Further research is needed to explore the use of yellow mealworms in aquafeed to address the challenges of traditional ingredients.
