Integral analysis of environmental and economic performance of combined agricultural intensification & bioenergy production in the Orinoquia region

Nidia Elizabeth Ramirez-Contreras et al.

Summary: Agricultural intensification is a key strategy to meet growing demand for food and bioenergy, as it can reduce land use change and associated environmental impacts while improving economic performance. In the Orinoquia region, different intensification scenarios show varying impacts on natural land conversion, biodiversity loss, water consumption, and economic benefits. Sustainable agricultural practices and productivity improvements are crucial for reducing pressure on natural areas and achieving sustainable agricultural development.

Halving nitrogen waste in the European Union food systems requires both dietary shifts and farm level actions

Adrian Leip et al.

Summary: This study explores the feasibility of reducing nitrogen waste and the pathways to success. It finds that the livestock sector has the greatest potential to increase nitrogen use efficiency in the current agro-food system. Among the 144 analyzed combinations of intervention options, 12 combinations can reduce nitrogen losses by about 50%, with 11 involving dietary changes. The study also assesses the societal appreciation of interventions and concludes that moderate intervention options can achieve halving of nitrogen losses at the lowest societal costs, with diet change appearing to be an essential condition for success.

Life cycle assessment of struvite recovery and wastewater sludge end-use: A Flemish illustration

Rahul Ravi et al.

Summary: Phosphate rock has been designated as a Critical Raw Material in the EU, leading to increased focus on alternative phosphorus recovery from wastewater sludge. Previous studies on this topic have reached contrasting conclusions. In this study, a combined functional unit was used to analyze the performance of a wastewater treatment plant with struvite recovery as the phosphorus recovery technology. Results showed marginal environmental benefits from struvite recovery. Additionally, a prospective LCA approach was used to evaluate different end-use options for wastewater sludge, indicating that complete mono-incineration of sludge, ash processing for phosphorus recovery, and subsequent land application may be less sustainable than the current practice of co-incineration with municipal solid waste and valorisation at cement kilns.

Environmental and economic sustainability of the nitrogen recovery paradigm: Evidence from a structured literature review

Marc Spiller et al.

Summary: This structured review analyzes the environmental and economic sustainability of Nr recovery technologies. The majority of studies conclude that direct Nr reuse is sustainable, but a system perspective in assessments is recommended. Comparisons of technology readiness levels should be carried out within the context of a decentralized Nr production economy.

Circularity in animal production requires a change in the EAT-Lancet diet in Europe

Benjamin van Selm et al.

Summary: A resource-allocation model was used to compare the effects of circularity on animal-source nutrients in Europe with the EAT-Lancet reference diet, finding compatibility in total animal-source proteins but not specific animal-source foods. Circular food systems can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 31% and arable land use by up to 42%, but careful consideration of the substitutability between animal-source foods is needed to define their potential roles in human diets.

Calculation of a food consumption nitrogen footprint for Germany

Laura Klement et al.

Summary: Reactive nitrogen released into the environment has negative implications for various aspects, and a nitrogen footprint can help assess the impact of personal choices. The N-Calculator tool, originally based on US data, requires revision when applied to other countries due to differences in food sector conditions. A revised N-Calculator for Germany, based on German food production data, showed varying nitrogen losses for different products, with animal-based products leading to higher losses. Validation of the results at the national level showed good agreement with statistical data on nitrogen flows in Germany.

Techno-economic assessment at full scale of a biogas refinery plant receiving nitrogen rich feedstock and producing renewable energy and biobased fertilisers

C. Brienza et al.

Summary: The study focused on monitoring the performance of a full scale digestate processing cascade with an innovative vacuum side stream NH3 stripping and scrubbing system, evaluating the production cost of ammonium sulphate solution, and assessing its fertilizer quality. The use of gypsum instead of sulphuric acid in the scrubbing unit allows for the recovery of NH3 in the form of salt solutions that can be used as a substitute for synthetic mineral nitrogen fertilizers.

Assessing agro-food system circularity using nutrient flows and budgets

Anastasia Papangelou et al.

Summary: Nutrient reuse and recycling are essential for circular and sustainable food systems, with the type of agricultural system being a crucial determinant. Our study in Belgium revealed that livestock-dominated areas accumulate higher nutrient surpluses compared to arable production areas, with the southern region outperforming the northern region in all circularity indicators. The overall phosphorus use efficiency rate in Belgium is 34%, with 84% of total inputs in agriculture coming from secondary sources.

Attributional & Consequential Life Cycle Assessment: Definitions, Conceptual Characteristics and Modelling Restrictions

Thomas Schaubroeck et al.

Summary: Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a common method to assess the potential environmental impact of human/industrial systems, with attributional (ALCA) and consequential (CLCA) being two prominent types. This article aims to argue for and select definitions for each concept, specify their characteristics, and go beyond current findings. ALCA attributes environmental impact to a product life cycle, while CLCA assesses the consequences of decisions, with different modelling restrictions and evaluation approaches for each type.
