Process design, modeling and life cycle analysis of energy consumption and GHG emission for jet fuel production from bioethanol in China

Xiao Wang et al.

Summary: China's increasing bioethanol production capacity makes the conversion of ethanol-to-jet fuel (ETJ) promising. This study used process simulation to model two novel ETJ processes combining corn cob gasification, syngas-to-ethanol, and ethanol-to-jet fuel. Life cycle assessment (LCA) was performed to evaluate energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of ETJs in China. The results showed that the ETJ pathway with corn cob gasification plus fermentation had the lowest energy consumption and GHG emissions, with 370.05 KJ/MJ jet fuel and 31.66 gCO2eq/MJ jet fuel, respectively. Given the scarcity of life cycle assessments for ETJs in China, this study can assist policymakers in determining the path for China's sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) development.

Exploring the hybrid route of bio-ethanol production via biomass co-gasification and syngas fermentation from wheat straw and sugarcane bagasse: Model development and multi-objective optimization

Soumitra Pati et al.

Summary: Biomass co-gasification and syngas fermentation using wheat straw and sugarcane bagasse as feedstock was studied. An equilibrium model was developed using Aspen plus to analyze the process performance. Regression equations were constructed to account for the effects of biomass ratio, gasification temperature, and equivalence ratio on ethanol production, energy efficiency, and CO2 emission. Multi-objective optimization was performed to maximize ethanol production and system efficiency and minimize CO2 emission, and an optimum condition was identified.

Life cycle assessment of bioethanol production from sugarcane bagasse using a gasification conversion Process: Bibliometric analysis, systematic literature review and a case study

E. Santoyo-Castelazo et al.

Summary: A new integrated methodology was developed to estimate the environmental impacts of bioethanol production from sugarcane bagasse in Mexico. The methodology included five modelling phases: bibliometric analysis, simulation, life cycle inventory, life cycle assessment, and analysis of major environmental burdens. The study found that the biofuel production and biofuel use in vehicles stages had the highest contributions to greenhouse gas emissions.

Toward understanding Fischer- Tropsch synthesis on cobalt carbides from first principles and microkinetic analysis

Haipeng Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, a comprehensive reaction network analysis on the Co2C(1 1 1) facet was conducted using first-principles-based microkinetics modeling. Pathways for generating methane, ethane, ethylene, acetaldehyde, ethanol, and C3+ products were identified, and the predicted product distribution matched experimental observations. The competition between hydrocarbon and oxygenate formation was analyzed, and the elementary reaction steps controlling product selectivity were quantitatively determined.

Biomass gasification as a key technology to reduce the environmental impact of virgin olive oil production: A Life Cycle Assessment approach

Lazuli Fernandez-Lobato et al.

Summary: The olive oil value chain faces challenges in terms of waste management and energy efficiency. This research proposes an integrated gasification plant fueled by olive pomace, which can provide heat and power generation for oil mills. Compared to traditional olive oil production, the gasification technology significantly reduces the environmental impact of olive oil production.

Air preheating and exhaust gas recirculation as keys to achieving an enhanced fuel water content range in stratified downdraft gasification

A. Zachl et al.

Summary: This study aimed to expand the acceptable fuel water content range in a wood chip-driven downdraft gasifier using air preheating and continuous exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). The results showed that air preheating shifted the flame front upward, allowing for higher fuel water content, while EGR reduced the fuel water content limit and improved the efficiency of the gasification process.
