A new paradigm of water, food, and energy nexus

Amir Molajou et al.

Summary: In recent decades, global demands for freshwater, energy, and food have been influenced by population growth, economic development, international trade, and increasing urbanization and food diversity. The lack of integrated management strategies poses a threat to the security of these resources, while climate change exacerbates the adverse impacts. Therefore, understanding and studying the complex interactions and connections between these systems have become crucial.

System dynamics modelling to simulate regional water-energy-food nexus combined with the society-economy-environment system in Hunan Province, China

Xinkui Wang et al.

Summary: This study incorporates society, economy and environment systems into the water-energy-food nexu,s and constructs a system dynamics model to simulate the development of the system in Hunan Province, China. The study finds that Hunan Province will have surplus of grain production and water resources, but imports will be needed to meet energy demand. As the development of the province outpaces environmental protection policies, water pollution and CO2 emissions are expected to increase. Trade-offs and synergies between different policy impacts indicate that the simultaneous implementation of multiple policies may affect progress towards certain goals.

Framing a novel holistic energy subsystem structure for water-energy-food nexus based on existing literature (basic concepts)

Masoud Vahabzadeh et al.

Summary: It is important to consider the relationship between water and energy in Iran, as the country heavily relies on energy revenues and is facing water stress. This study proposes a comprehensive framework to analyze Iran's energy subsystem within the Water, Energy, and Food (WEF) nexus system. By using data and equations, the supply and demand side of the energy subsystem are modeled, and interactions between WEF subsystems are addressed. The findings suggest that analyzing the interactions between WEF can enhance the flexibility of the energy subsystem and optimize water allocation and management in Iran.

Water, energy, and food nexus efficiency in China: A provincial assessment using a three-stage data envelopment analysis model

Daohan Huang et al.

Summary: Understanding the region-specific efficiency of the water, energy, and food (WEF) nexus is critical for effective governance strategies. This study used a three-stage data envelopment analysis to measure the WEF efficiency in 30 provinces in China from 2005 to 2016, excluding the influence of external environments. The results showed an increase in overall WEF efficiency, with the water scarcity-energy importing group exhibiting the highest efficiency. External environmental factors hindered the enhancement of WEF nexus efficiency, emphasizing the need for strategies addressing these factors and resource endowment.

Establishing effective warning storage to derive optimal reservoir operation policy based on the drought condition

Mahdi Beshavard et al.

Summary: The conventional discrete hedging model is connected to a drought early warning system (DEWS) and a new concept called effective warning storage (ES). An optimization model is used to search for threshold values and rationing coefficients in a reservoir system, resulting in an improvement of the objective function. The proposed hedging policy shows better performance in adjusting deficiencies and reducing vulnerability compared to the standard operation policy (SOP) method.
