Influence of different LCIA methods on an exemplary scenario analysis from a process development LCA case study

Daniel Koch et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of different Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) methods on decision support in process development using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) scenario analysis. A biorefinery LCA case study was used and various LCIA methods were applied to analyze the impact categories of global warming potential (GWP), eutrophication potential (EP), and water assessment (WA). The results showed that different LCIA methods can lead to consistent or conflicting interpretations in scenario analysis, which may be attributed to the selection of LCIA methods and the sensitivity of indicators. Understanding these influences and reasons behind the variations is crucial for decision support in process development.

Intensifying the environmental performance of chicken meat production in China: From perspective of life cycle assessment

Ziyue Cheng et al.

Summary: This study systematically analyzed the potential environmental burden of chicken meat production in China from 2010 to 2019 and proposed optimization recommendations. The main environmental impacts of chicken meat production were found to come from the production of maize feed, particularly soybean meal production and maize cultivation processes. Areas for improvement included fossil depletion, water depletion, particulates formation, and global warming. The national environmental burden caused by chicken meat production in China has been constantly increasing, with Fujian being the dominant province. China's chicken meat production is globally competitive compared to other regions, and composting broiler chicken manure, replacing soybean meal with grain legumes, and reducing soybean meal content are environmentally friendly options.

Technically efficient, economic and environmentally benign hybrid decentralized energy solution for an Indian village: Multi criteria decision making approach

Sayan Das et al.

Summary: Decentralized hybrid energy system is considered as a potential sustainable solution for global energy transition. Optimization for better sustainability is complex, involving technical, economic, and environmental issues. A methodology integrating techno-economic optimization, life cycle assessment, and multi criteria decision making approach is demonstrated for a remote Indian village, aiming to achieve technically efficient, economically feasible, and environmentally benign energy solutions.

An Overview of Poultry Greenhouse Gas Emissions in the Mediterranean Area

Foivos Zisis et al.

Summary: The rapid increase in food demand is driven by the growing population and income. Greece and other Mediterranean countries are characterized by a high proportion of mountains, which favor goat and sheep breeding, but poultry breeding is also important and rapidly increasing. Poultry breeding involves rearing millions of birds with increased quantities and prices of feedstuffs. This leads to a parallel increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, as poultry production generates a significant amount of GHG. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of poultry GHG in the Mediterranean area, including emissions sources and mitigation practices. The future looks promising, with the implementation of sustainable practices.

Effects of physical aging processes on the bioavailability of heavy metals in contaminated site soil amended with chicken manure and wheat straw biochars

Kai Yang et al.

Summary: The aging processes of biochars in soils can slowly change their physicochemical properties, influencing their interaction with heavy metals. The effects of aging on immobilization of co-existing heavy metals in contaminated soils amended with contrasting biochars remain unclear. This study investigated the effects of wet-dry and freeze-thaw aging on the bioavailability and chemical fractionation of Cd and Pb in contaminated soil amended with chicken manure (CM) biochar and wheat straw (WS) biochar. The results showed that CM biochar effectively reduced the bioavailability of Cd and Pb, while WS biochar only immobilized Pb under freeze-thaw aging. The changes in heavy metal immobilization resulted from aging-induced alterations in biochar surface functional groups, porous structure, and dissolved organic carbon release. These findings are important for selecting suitable biochars for immobilizing multiple heavy metals in co-contaminated soil under changing environmental conditions.

A global perspective on a new paradigm shift in bio-based meat alternatives for healthy diet

Akanksha Rai et al.

Summary: A meat analogue, also known as meat substitute, fake meat, alternative meat, or imitation meat, is a casserole that uses a primary ingredient other than meat. The increasing interest of consumers in improving their diets and the sustainability of the planet has led to a shift towards meat substitutes. Various types of meat alternatives, such as plant-based meat, cultured meat, algal protein-based meat, and insect-based meat substitutes, are available on the market, offering similar appearance and flavor to traditional meat. The industry of meat substitutes is growing rapidly in both Western and Asian markets, driven by factors like low-fat and low-calorie diets, flexitarianism, animal diseases, natural resource depletion, and the need to reduce carbon emissions and greenhouse effects. Future growth in the food sector is expected to come from technologies like lab-grown meat and insect-based products, although factors such as product safety, quality, marketability, and affordability should be considered.

Environmental impact of second-generation biofuels production from agricultural residues in Cameroon: A life-cycle assessment study

Rufis Fregue Tiegam Tagne et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the environmental impact assessment of second-generation liquid and gaseous biofuel production in Cameroon, utilizing the Life Cycle Assessment method to identify hotspots in the conversion of biomass to bioethanol and biomethane. The findings will serve as a reference for decision-making in pilot plants and large-scale production, aiming to promote sustainable development of a biomass-energy industry based on avocado seeds, cocoa pods, and peanut shells.

A critical review of superfoods from a holistic nutritional and environmental approach

Ana Fernandez-Rios et al.

Summary: Superfoods are highly nutritious and environmentally friendly food choices in the global arena, but there is still a need for further research on their environmental impacts. Recommendations for future studies include expanding the scope of data, improving data quality and standardization, and using a wider range of indicators for analysis. This scientific field is still underexplored, and more research using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is encouraged to fill the current scientific gap.
