Revealing the link between evolution of electron transfer capacity of humic acid and key enzyme activities during anaerobic digestion

Xiqing Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the electron transfer capacity (ETC) of HAs increased during anaerobic digestion process at both mesophilic (671-1479 mu mol gHA-1) and thermophilic (774-1506 mu mol gHA-1) conditions. The ETC was positively correlated with bacterial community in hydrolytic and acidogenic phases, but negatively correlated with archaeal community in methanogenic phase. Furthermore, HAs formed under thermophilic conditions had a greater influence on key enzyme activities than those formed under mesophilic conditions.

Overview of electroactive microorganisms and electron transfer mechanisms in microbial electrochemistry

Bhim Sen Thapa et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of electroactive microorganisms (bacteria, microalgae, and fungi) acting as microbial electrocatalysts, and their exo- and endo-electron transfer mechanisms in bioelectrochemical systems (BESs). These microorganisms convert organic and inorganic compounds to electricity and biochemicals, ultimately optimizing and advancing bioelectrochemical techniques.

Ultrafast removal of humic acid by amine-modified silica aerogel: Insights from experiments and density functional theory calculation

Kao Chen et al.

Summary: A facile one-pot sol-gel synthesis was used to prepare an amine-modified silica aerogel (AMSA) using agricultural waste rice husk ash as a silica source. The AMSA exhibited excellent adsorption capacity for highly concentrated humic acid (HA). The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich model, and the main mechanisms were electrostatic interaction, O-H...N hydrogen bonding, and self-aggregation.

Co-occurrence network analysis reveals loss of microbial interactions in anaerobic digester subjected to repeated organic load shocks

Jericho Victor Mercado et al.

Summary: Fluctuations in the organic loading rate (OLR) of anaerobic digestion (AD) can lead to unstable methane production. This study investigated the impact of repeated high OLR shocks on the microbial community dynamics within AD. The results showed that less frequent organic load shocks led to a decrease in methane productivity and a breakdown of the microbiome network structure. The identification of influential species in the network structure revealed the importance of Anaerovorax, Spirochaetales, and Synergistales. It was inferred that the OLR shocks shifted the microbiome activity away from methane production pathways. Overall, developing a resilient AD microbiome would be necessary for small-scale AD systems that can withstand infrequent organic loading shocks.

Analysis of alternative bioenergy with carbon capture strategies: present and future

Caleb H. Geissler et al.

Summary: Biomass can be converted to various bioenergies through different conversion technologies, and carbon capture can be applied to reduce CO2 emissions. The optimal conversion technology and level of carbon capture depend on constraints and parameters. Pyrolysis and gasification are the most cost-effective methods for producing liquid fuels, while electricity and hydrogen have lower costs per unit of forward motion. Gasification to electricity is currently the best option for greenhouse gas mitigation, but gasification to hydrogen is expected to be more effective in the future.

Co-occurrence network analysis reveals loss of microbial interactions in anaerobic digester subjected to repeated organic load shocks

Jericho Victor Mercado et al.

Summary: This study explores the relationship between AD performance and dynamics of microbial interactions in response to high OLR shocks at different frequencies, finding that less frequent organic load shocks lead to deterioration of methane productivity and breakdown of the microbiome network structure. Identification of key species influencing the network structure implies that the impact imposed by OLR shocks shifts microbiome activity towards pathways not contributing to methane production. Establishing a small-scale AD system resilient to infrequent organic loading shocks is key for managing OLR fluctuations.
