Impacts of doping cadmium atoms on the mechanical properties of (n,0) zigzag SWCNTs: DFT approach

Mohammad Najat Rashko et al.

Summary: The elastic constants and elastic modulus of un-doped and Cd-doped (4-6, 0) zigzag SWCNTs with different diameters were investigated using density functional theory. Three crystal structures, hexagonal, orthorhombic, and triclinic, were examined and all cases exhibited anisotropy. The results revealed positive and negative values for the elastic constants (ECs), where negative values indicated soft features. The elastic modulus varied for un-doped and Cd-doped tubes, with Young's modulus (Y), shear modulus (G), and bulk modulus (B) showing fluctuations depending on the tube diameter. The relationship between these elastic moduli and the diameter of un-doped and Cd-doped zigzag SWCNTs was explored, showing that Voigt's Y increased with tube diameter for both un-doped and Cd-doped, while Reuss and Hill's Y fluctuated. Similar trends were observed for G in terms of its curve value and its relation to the tube diameter. The B values of un-doped (4-6, 0) increased with diameter, whereas Cd-doped (4-6, 0) showed the opposite trend. These findings were strongly influenced by the diameter, n index, and presence of doping.

A DFT insight into structural, mechanical, elasto-acoustic, and anisotropic properties of AePdH3 (Ae = Ca, Sr, Ba) perovskites under pressure

M. A. H. Shah et al.

Summary: A systematic ab initio study was conducted to investigate the properties of AePdH3 perovskites. The study found that these hydrides are energetically stable and mechanically stable. The anisotropic nature of the perovskites was explained by examining elastic moduli and acoustic velocities. BaPdH3 hydrides exhibited the highest level of anisotropy.

Exploring the elastic, mechanical and anisotropic response of Ti-5Al-XSn alloys through DFT calculations

E. Guler et al.

Summary: Titanium-based alloys, including Ti-5Al-XSn alloys, are widely used in aviation, biomaterial, and automobile industries due to their superior mechanical properties. In this theoretical study, the elastic, mechanical, and anisotropic properties of Ti-5Al-XSn alloys were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results showed that the alloys exhibited mechanical stability and increasing Sn content led to enhanced ductility, machinability, and elastic anisotropy while decreasing hardness.

Effective reuse of red mud as supplementary material in cemented paste backfill: Durability and environmental impact

Zhikai Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of using Bayer red mud (RM) in cemented paste backfill (CPB) technology. The experimental results demonstrated that the optimum proportion of RM-CPB achieved the required strength and exhibited good durability and permeability. The leaching tests also showed that the concentration of heavy metals in the leachate was within the specified range, indicating the potential of reusing Bayer red mud as a supplementary backfill material for the large-scale utilization of industrial solid waste.

Insights into the thermal effect on the fracture toughness of calcium silicate hydrate grains: A reactive molecular dynamics study

Yao Zhang et al.

Summary: Cement-based materials exhibit brittle properties at the macro scale, but the main phase of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) grains shows better ductility at the nanoscale. Reactive molecular dynamics simulations reveal that heating can enhance the fracture toughness and energy release rate of C-S-H grains. Furthermore, heating can improve the brittleness of C-S-H grains, with the degree of improvement depending on the chemical compositions and temperature levels.

DFT insights into the electronic structure, mechanical behaviour, lattice dynamics and defect processes in the first Sc-based MAX phase Sc2SnC

M. A. Hadi et al.

Summary: In this study, density functional theory calculations were utilized to examine the physical properties and defect processes of Sc2SnC. It was found that Sc2SnC is structurally, mechanically, and dynamically stable, with a mixture of covalent and ionic character. Sc2SnC exhibits favorable deformability, hardness, and melting point, and has the potential to be transformed into 2D MXenes and used as a thermal barrier coating material, similar to other members of the M2SnC family.

New insights into the mechanism governing the elasticity of calcium silicate hydrate gels exposed to high temperature: A molecular dynamics study

Yao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study using reactive molecular dynamics simulations revealed the nature of thermally-induced damage in C-S-H gels, showing that exposure to high temperature leads to partial dehydration, volumetric shrinkage, disordering, and stiffening in the C-S-H grains. The thermal response of C-S-H strongly depends on its chemical composition, where systems with lower Ca/Si molar ratios can withstand higher temperatures before amorphization occurs.

Enhancement of cement-based solidification/stabilization of a lead-contaminated smectite clay

V. R. Ouhadi et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the influence of pH-dependent lead solubility patterns on the solidification/stabilization of contaminated smectite and the use of NaOH treatment to overcome problems associated with cement hydration. The research shows that enhancement increases the pH of contaminated soil, leading to a decrease in lead precipitation on cement components and an increase in CSH formation, improving the setting-time and strength of the samples. Additionally, the results demonstrate a noticeable reduction in the required cement content and a shift in retention phenomena from precipitation/stabilization to capsulation/solidification.
