Blue and green hydrogen energy to meet European Union decarbonisation objectives. An overview of perspectives and the current state of affairs

Giovanni Lagioia et al.

Summary: This article is a narrative literature review on the production technologies and handling methods of blue and green hydrogen to meet the European Union decarbonisation objectives by 2030. The implementation of the European hydrogen use roadmap faces challenges due to technical and infrastructure barriers. While green hydrogen is not yet competitive compared to fossil fuel-based hydrogen production, blue hydrogen can pave the way for its future development. It is important to prioritize the adaptation and upgrading of hydrogen storage and deployment, as well as regulations for international trade.

A New Turbomachine for Clean and Sustainable Hydrocarbon Cracking

Dylan Rubini et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel concept of a turboreactor for decarbonizing high-temperature industrial processes. By replacing surface heat exchange with mechanical energy transfer driven by renewable electricity, the turboreactor significantly improves the energy efficiency of the process. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the ultrahigh aerodynamic loading rotor and complex shockwave system in energy conversion. With a specific design of a single rotor row and flow guidance, the turboreactor reduces reactor volume while optimizing chemical reaction yield and minimizing coke deposition, leading to increased plant availability.

Review of Electric Cracking of Hydrocarbons

M. E. H. Tijani et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the current state of electric cracking and identifies potential electric heating technologies for the electrification of cracking processes. Resistance heating is considered a promising technology for steam cracking of naphtha. The electrification of cracking processes may have a higher cost than conventional methods, but it can be offset by reducing feedstock consumption.

A new robust regenerative turbo-reactor concept for clean hydrocarbon cracking

Dylan Rubini et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a feasible solution to reduce the energy consumption in the chemical and petrochemical industries by using direct renewable electrification for the hydrocarbon cracking process. This solution not only improves the efficiency of energy transfer, but also enhances the quality of the cracking process. By replacing the fossil-fueled radiant unit with a new electric motor-driven turbo-reactor, controlled endothermic cracking reactions can be generated, leading to increased primary product yield, mitigated coke deposition, and improved operability.

The potential of direct steam cracker electrification and carbon capture & utilization via oxidative coupling of methane as decarbonization strategies for ethylene production

Lucia S. Layritz et al.

Summary: The article analyzes two main strategies to reduce emissions from ethylene production, direct electrification and indirect electrification, and shows how emissions can be maximally reduced based on electricity carbon intensity. It is pointed out that achieving a net-zero emission production process through decarbonized electricity supply and product recycling may only be possible after 2030.
