Wet scrubbing process with oxidation and reduction in series for removal of SO2 and NO from marine diesel engine exhaust

Terence Chin et al.

Summary: A novel wet scrubber with an oxidation and a reducing section in series was used to remove SO2 and NOx from simulated ship emissions. Sodium chlorite and sodium thiosulfate served as the oxidizing and reducing agents respectively. The results showed that adjusting the pH of the chlorite oxidant affected NO oxidation and nitrogen formation rates, while the efficiency of removing NO2 was higher with sulfite compared to thiosulfate. However, thiosulfate had a significantly lower reactant consumption rate and formed less soluble nitrogen, making it a promising option. Precipitation of sulfur can be prevented by operating at a high pH. Mixing the washwater from both sections allows for adjustment of oxidation potential within nitrate limits.

Investigation on control strategy optimisation of harsh transient condition for a marine natural gas engine

Chong Xia et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the harsh transient conditions of a marine natural gas engine under load characteristics and propulsion characteristics. A cooperative control strategy is proposed, which effectively reduces the engine's Lambda value and controls the speed recovery time to about 10 seconds.

Energy efficiency in ship operations-Exploring voyage decisions and decision-makers

Rene Taudal Poulsen et al.

Summary: This paper studies the impact of voyage planning and execution decisions on energy efficiency in shipping, distinguishing between the commercial and nautical aspects. It reveals that commercial decisions have a greater influence on energy efficiency and highlights the highly networked nature of decision-making in this field. Therefore, regulatory measures to mitigate climate change should extend their focus to include cargo owners in addition to shipowners and technical managers, to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions in maritime transport.

Experimental study on removal performance of SO2 and NOx in marine exhaust gas using seawater/urea peroxide solution and analysis of ions concentration change

Jinxi Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found that the use of seawater/urea peroxide composite absorption solution can efficiently remove NOx and SO2 emissions from marine diesel engines, showing high removal efficiency. Seawater can enhance the absorption capacity of urea peroxide solution for NOx, but may lead to a slight decrease in ammonium salt concentration. In practical applications, the reaction time needs to be strictly controlled to ensure effectiveness.

A Novel Approach to Reduce the Environmental Footprint of Maritime Shipping

Domenico Flagiello et al.

Summary: Maritime shipping is a strategically important and globally managed industry, but the formulation of environmental regulations, particularly for atmospheric emissions, has been slowed down due to the need to accommodate different countries' regulations. Two main approaches for reducing sulphur emissions are through the use of low-sulphur fuels or exhaust gas cleaning systems, known as Scrubbers. However, the specific concerns related to these solutions include toxicity of by-products, fuel cost, and generation of polluting washwaters that may require treatment before discharge.

Droplet size distribution in a full-scale rectangular self-priming Venturi scrubber with liquid film injection

David Breitenmoser et al.

Summary: The study investigated droplet size distributions in an industrial self-priming Venturi scrubber with liquid film injection, revealing a shift in droplet size with gas flow rate but no change with submergence level. Comparisons with spray injection correlations showed significant overestimation, while correlations developed for annular flows in straight tubes had better consistency with experimental data.
