Sustainable processing of gold cyanide tailings: Reduction roasting, mechanical activation, non-cyanide leaching, and magnetic separation

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes an eco-friendly and efficient method to recover gold, iron, and silicon from cyanide tailings (CTs). By controlling the reduction atmosphere and temperature, >99% of cyanide can be selectively removed, along with 65.3% of encapsulated gold in iron oxide and sulfide. Mechanical activation reduces particle size and liberates 92.3% of gold encapsulated in silicate and iron oxide minerals, increasing the extraction efficiency of gold to 94.5% in a non-cyanide leaching process. Magnetic separation results in 60.9% grade and 74.6% recovery of iron concentrate, while the tailings with 28.4% Si grade can be used in building materials. This technology enables the harmless utilization of hazardous CTs and shows potential for industrial applications.

Effective fluoride removal from brackish groundwaters by flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) under a continuous-flow mode

Huan Jiang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the effectiveness of utilizing flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) for treating fluoride-contaminated brackish groundwater. The study found that short-circuited closed-cycle (SCC) mode was the most advantageous operational mode. Factors such as current density, hydraulic residence time (HRT), activated carbon loading, and feed concentration of coexisting NaCl were found to affect the removal of F- and Cl-. F- was preferentially removed from the treated water compared with Cl-, and the removal efficiencies of both ions decreased with increasing feed concentration of coexisting NaCl.

Concurrent removal of hardness and fluoride in water by monopolar electrocoagulation

J. U. Halpegama et al.

Summary: Water treatment based on electrocoagulation is attractive due to in-situ production of chemicals and colloids, but optimization of operation parameters is necessary. Response surface method was used to optimize EC cell parameters, achieving optimal removal efficiencies for hardness and fluoride. Different chemical species in the solution matrix significantly affect the hardness and fluoride removal efficiencies.
