Protein quality as a complementary functional unit in life cycle assessment (LCA)

G. A. McAuliffe et al.

Summary: A number of recent life cycle assessment (LCA) studies have highlighted the environmental impacts of animal-sourced foods and suggested restrictions or avoidance of these foods in human diets. However, it is important to consider nutrient bioavailability and protein quality before making such recommendations, especially considering their contribution to nutrient adequacy in vulnerable populations. This paper discusses the usefulness of nutritional LCA (nLCA) and proposes the consideration of protein quality in nLCA studies.

Friend or Foe? The Role of Animal-Source Foods in Healthy and Environmentally Sustainable Diets

Ty Beal et al.

Summary: Scientific and political discussions on the role of animal-source foods (ASFs) in healthy and sustainable diets are usually divisive. This critical review examines the evidence on the health and environmental benefits and risks of ASFs and summarizes the evidence on alternative proteins. ASFs are rich in essential nutrients and can enhance food and nutrition security, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. However, excessive consumption of processed meat, red meat, and saturated fat should be limited, taking into account noncommunicable disease risks and environmental sustainability. When produced sustainably, ASFs can contribute to biodiversity restoration and greenhouse gas emissions mitigation. The amount and type of ASFs that are healthy and sustainable depend on local contexts, health priorities, and availability of alternative foods.

Nutritional Assessment of Plant-Based Meat Alternatives: A Comparison of Nutritional Information of Plant-Based Meat Alternatives in Spanish Supermarkets

Lucia Rizzolo-Brime et al.

Summary: Since the classification of processed meat as carcinogenic, there has been an increase in consumption of plant-based meat alternatives worldwide. This study analyzed the nutritional profile and processing degree of PBMAs available in Spanish supermarkets. The majority of the products had moderate levels of carbohydrates, total and saturated fat, and high levels of salt, with soy and wheat gluten being the main vegetable protein sources. These PBMAs were classified as ultra-processed foods and further research is needed to determine their role in healthier and more sustainable dietary patterns.

Harnessing the connectivity of climate change, food systems and diets: Taking action to improve human and planetary health*

Jessica Fanzo et al.

Summary: With climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, and ongoing conflicts, food systems and diets are becoming more fragile. Climate change adversely affects food systems, leading to challenges in food production and threatening global access to healthy diets. In addition, the way food is produced and transported accelerates climate change and biodiversity loss. This review highlights the connection between climate change and food systems, the impact of dietary trends on human health and the environment, and specific food policies to address climate change and improve human and planetary health.

Changes in greenhouse gas emissions from food supply in the United Kingdom

Kerry Stewart et al.

Summary: Food systems contribute a significant percentage of global greenhouse gas emissions, and reducing these emissions is crucial for climate change mitigation. This study analyzed the changes in greenhouse gas emissions from food supply in the UK between 1986 and 2017 and assessed the contributions of supply-side and demand-side changes. The results showed the potential for further reduction in emissions through adopting the Planetary Health Diet and highlighted the importance of dietary change in mitigating food-related emissions.

Co-benefits of the EAT-Lancet diet for environmental protection in the framework of the Spanish dietary pattern

Cristina Cambeses-Franco et al.

Summary: Building resilient food systems with lower greenhouse gas emissions and protection of water resources is a global challenge. This study compares the carbon and water footprints of the Spanish dietary pattern with the global dietary recommendations of the EAT-Lancet Commission and finds that the EAT-Lancet diet has lower environmental indicators. Meat and dairy products in the Spanish diet are identified as major contributors to environmental impacts, and reducing their consumption would lead to more environmentally sustainable food consumption patterns.

Knowledge and perceptions of food sustainability in a Spanish university population

M. Clara de Moraes Prata Gaspar et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the level of knowledge and perceptions of food sustainability in a university community from Spain. The results showed that over 50% of the respondents were aware of the existence of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and had knowledge about the environmental impact of food. The participants were most concerned about food waste, plastic usage, and environmental impact in relation to their diet. They believed that a sustainable diet should be based on local and seasonal products, with minimal food waste. The study also found that 60% of the surveyed population generated food waste at home.

A conceptual framework for understanding the environmental impacts of ultra-processed foods and implications for sustainable food systems

K. Anastasiou et al.

Summary: This review examines the environmental impacts of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and identifies the terms and methods used to measure these impacts. The study found that UPFs contribute significantly to diet-related energy use, biodiversity loss, greenhouse gas emissions, land use, food waste, and water use in high-income countries. The production and consumption of UPFs also have negative effects on land degradation, herbicide use, eutrophication, and packaging use. The findings highlight the importance of addressing the environmental degradation associated with UPFs and provide insights for food policy and future research.

Massimiliano Tucci et al.

Summary: By comparing the carbon and water footprints of Italian-Mediterranean dietary patterns, it was found that the EAT-IT pattern had lower carbon emissions but similar water footprint compared to the IDG pattern. Protein-rich foods were identified as the main contributors to environmental impact in both patterns. Additionally, individual food choices were shown to significantly influence environmental outcomes.

Healthier and more sustainable diets: What changes are needed in high-income countries?

Simon Steenson et al.

Summary: Debate continues about the need for food production and dietary changes to improve the sustainability of the global food system. Studies suggest that diets aligned with dietary guidelines containing less meat and more plant-based foods can offer environmental benefits and improve health, but may not reduce water footprint. Vegetarian and vegan diets may have larger environmental benefits, but widespread adoption is unlikely and may impact intake of essential nutrients. Adhering to existing government dietary guidelines is recommended to improve environmental and health impacts, considering wider implications and trade-offs related to dietary changes.

Summary: The study compared two dietary plans based on Italian food habits and the Italian Dietary Guidelines, revealing differences in fruit and vegetable consumption, as well as protein sources. Despite similarities, the EAT-IT plan showed some nutritional issues, such as higher energy from lipids and vegetal protein, and lower levels of calcium compared to the IDG-based plan. Further studies are needed to determine the potential impact on health and feasibility of sustainable dietary patterns.
