Making Authoritarian Environmentalism Accountable? Understanding China's New Reforms on Environmental Governance

Summary: China has launched institutional reforms to address the execution gaps of environmental policies at the local level. By enforcing party disciplines and holding inquiry meetings with local government leaders, Beijing aims to reconfigure power relations in environmental governance. However, the highly politicized approach may weaken the role of legal enforcement and lead to discontent among local officers.
