Comparative life cycle assessment of LFP and NCM batteries including the secondary use and different recycling technologies

Jiawei Quan et al.

Summary: This study used life cycle assessment (LCA) to quantify and compare the environmental impacts of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries and lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide (NCM) batteries. The results showed that NCM batteries had better overall environmental performance but shorter service life. In China, the production phase had the greatest environmental impact, and recycling of waste batteries could help mitigate environmental burdens. Optimizing the charge discharge efficiency and increasing the use of clean energy were crucial in reducing the environmental impacts of batteries over their entire life cycle.

Advances in Intelligent Regeneration of Cathode Materials for Sustainable Lithium-Ion Batteries

Yachao Jin et al.

Summary: The explosive increase in the market penetration of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has raised concerns about nonrenewable metal resources and environmental pollution due to the upcoming wave of retired LIBs. Recycling retired LIBs in an environmentally sustainable and cost-effective way has become urgent. The direct regeneration strategy, which repairs degraded cathode materials in retired LIBs, shows great superiority compared to conventional metallurgical methods. However, there are still scientific and technological obstacles to overcome in the development of direct regeneration methods. This review summarizes the current states of various direct regeneration approaches and highlights their importance in constructing a truly green closed loop industry for future sustainable energy.
