Changes in perspective needed to forge 'no-regret' forest-based climate change mitigation strategies

Karl-Heinz Erb et al.

Summary: Forest-based mitigation strategies are important for preventing catastrophic climate change, but there is disagreement on how to implement them. One view favors enhanced wood use as a substitute for emissions-intensive products, while others focus on forest conservation and restoration for carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation. We propose a new perspective that takes into account forest growth dynamics and the carbon cost associated with wood use, and emphasizes the potential and desired carbon sequestration of forests.

Bioeconomy as a societal transformation: Mentalities, conflicts and social practices

Dennis Eversberg et al.

Summary: The article emphasizes the need to understand the societal changes envisioned and contested in the bioeconomy debate beyond policy debates and stakeholder positions. Using German survey data, the study explores social conflicts and coalitions related to bio-based, post-fossil transformations, revealing tensions between different socio-ecological mentalities that shape possibilities for transformations in Germany.

Systematic review on the energy conversion efficiency of biomass-based Fischer-Tropsch plants

A. E. M. van den Oever et al.

Summary: The study reviewed literature on the energy efficiency of biomass-based Fischer-Tropsch plants, highlighting the limited number of techno-economic assessments due to the early stage of Bio-FT technology development. Plant design features for high conversion efficiency and low production costs include feeding biomass at low moisture content, pressurized gasifiers, and using efficient FT catalysts. Despite no correlation between overall efficiency and biofuel production cost, a moderate correlation was found between biomass-to-fuel efficiency and production cost.

Application of holistic and integrated LCSA: Case study on laminated veneer lumber production in Central Germany

Walther Zeug et al.

Summary: This study developed a holistic and integrated life cycle sustainability assessment method to evaluate the contribution of bioeconomy to sustainable development. The results showed that renewable bio-based construction materials generally have better holistic sustainability compared to fossil-based products, although the fossil fuel components need to be reduced and replaced.

Techno-economically-driven identification of ideal plant configurations for a new biomass-to-liquid process-A case study for Central-Europe

Simon Maier et al.

Summary: The conversion of agricultural waste into 2nd generation biofuels offers a sustainable solution to future fuel demand. Techno-economic analyses are conducted to determine the optimal process design for different regions. The production costs of new concepts are estimated based on experimental data, with considerations for transportation and refining costs.

A framework for implementing holistic and integrated life cycle sustainability assessment of regional bioeconomy

Walther Zeug et al.

Summary: This study aims to establish a practical framework for integrated LCSA through selecting indicators and conducting comprehensive assessments based on the combination of life cycle assessment methods and Sustainable Development Goals. The use of openLCA enables an integrative LCSA by conducting all steps in a single framework, meeting the various requirements of stakeholders.

Doing more with less: Provisioning systems and the transformation of the stock-flow-service nexus

Christina Plank et al.

Summary: The relationship between stocks, resource flows and services is crucial for social-ecological transformations. Introducing the concept of provisioning systems helps analyze the relationship between resources and actors, understanding the construction and transformation of stock-flow-service nexus. This understanding can help define options for the transformation of the stock-flow-service nexus in a transdisciplinary process.

Bridging barriers in sustainability research: ? review from sustainability science to life cycle sustainability assessment

Katerina Troullaki et al.

Summary: Sustainability science (SS) aims to promote interdisciplinary research practices to create actionable knowledge for sustainability transitions, but its integration with sustainability assessment (SA) remains limited. Few SAs have applied SS concepts in practice, indicating the need for further application and collaboration among SS and SA scholars to enhance robust and socially-embedded assessment frameworks.
