Novel size-based design of spiral microfluidic devices with elliptic configurations and trapezoidal cross-section for ultra-fast isolation of circulating tumor cells

Kazem Akbarnataj et al.

Summary: This study proposes novel microfluidic devices based on size-dependent cell-sorting for label-free, ultra-fast enrichment of circulating tumor cells (CTCs). The devices were evaluated through numerical simulation and demonstrated optimal separation efficiency at a flow rate of 2.5 mL/min, achieving CTC purity values between 88% and 90%.

Optimizing the design of a serpentine microchannel based on particles focusing and separation: A numerical study with experimental validation

Sina Ebrahimi et al.

Summary: Cell-based diagnosis and personalized drugs require effective cell isolation, and this study presents an optimized structure using the finite element method to achieve cell separation and focusing. Two serpentine micro-channel designs (fixed and variable slope) were presented, and their simulation results were verified with experimental findings. The optimized microchannels showed high separation efficiency and particle focusing efficiency, opening new possibilities for improved diagnosis.

Particles Focusing and Separation by a Novel Inertial Microfluidic Device: Divergent Serpentine Microchannel

Ali Amani et al.

Summary: Microfluidic experiments have been widely used in medical sciences and engineering, and this study investigated the focusing and separation of particles with different sizes and densities using inertial microfluidic devices. The simulation results showed that the divergent geometry had better performance in separating and focusing particles compared to the convergent geometry.

Enhanced oil-in-water droplet generation in a T-junction microchannel using water-based nanofluids with shear-thinning behavior: A numerical study

Mohsen Besanjideh et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of aqueous nanofluids on droplet formation through numerical simulations. It was found that using nanofluids with shear-thinning behavior as the continuous phase results in a decrease in droplet size, with a more intensified reduction as the concentration of nanoparticles increases. Additionally, changes in the droplet formation regime can be more easily achieved when nanofluids are used as the continuous phase compared to using pure water due to the enhancement of viscous shear force.

Inertial microfluidics in contraction-expansion microchannels: A review

Di Jiang et al.

Summary: Inertial microfluidics has become a major trend in sample pretreatment, with contraction-expansion microchannels enhancing the efficiency of inertial microfluidics and allowing for more precise particle separation using vortex and secondary flow. Recent studies have focused on the use of viscoelastic fluids for precise particle separation at lower flow rates, particularly for delicate cells.

Design of a Hybrid Inertial and Magnetophoretic Microfluidic Device for CTCs Separation from Blood

Rohollah Nasiri et al.

Summary: Isolating circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from blood samples is crucial for cancer diagnosis and treatment, and microfluidics shows great potential in this area. Combining inertial and magnetic methods on a single chip was found to be effective in separating CTCs, with high recovery rates and purity levels.
