Experimentally imposed circadian misalignment alters the neural response to monetary rewards and response inhibition in healthy adolescents

Brant P. Hasler et al.

Summary: Experimental evidence suggests that circadian misalignment resulting from school schedules may have measurable impacts on healthy adolescents' reward processing and inhibition of prepotent responses.

Circadian depression: A mood disorder phenotype

Joanne S. Carpenter et al.

Summary: Major mood syndromes are common and disabling mental disorders, with a lack of clear delineation of underlying pathophysiological mechanisms hindering prevention and treatment. Dysfunction of the 24-h circadian system is a potential mechanism linked to mood syndromes. 'Circadian depression' is proposed as a new clinical phenotype with disrupted 24-h sleep-wake cycles, reduced motor activity, low subjective energy, and weight gain as key characteristics. Early onset, bipolarity features, poor response to traditional antidepressants, and concurrent cardiometabolic and inflammatory issues are part of the illness course associated with this phenotype. Identifying and targeting circadian disturbances in mood syndromes may offer valuable clinical insights for effective treatment strategies.

In-person vs home schooling during the COVID-19 pandemic: Differences in sleep, circadian timing, and mood in early adolescence

Julia E. Stone et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the rapid transition to remote learning allowed for a study on the impact of in-person versus remote learning on sleep, circadian timing, and mood in adolescents. This study found that remote learning resulted in delayed sleep times, longer sleep duration, and a later circadian phase for wakefulness. Additionally, participants reported lower sleepiness and anxiety symptoms during remote learning.

Using Mendelian Randomisation methods to understand whether diurnal preference is causally related to mental health

Jessica O'Loughlin et al.

Summary: The study aimed to quantify the causal contribution of diurnal preference on mental health outcomes, using observational and genetic approaches to show that early diurnal preference is protective against depression and improves wellbeing. Further research is needed to confirm the role of behavioral factors, including circadian misalignment, in the relationship between chronotype and depression.
