Functional neurological disorder in children and young people: Incidence, clinical features, and prognosis

Kenneith Yong et al.

Summary: This study aimed to report the incidence, demographic and clinical characteristics, and symptom outcome of functional neurological disorder (FND) in children. The results showed that the annual incidence of FND in children was 18.3 per 100,000, with a higher likelihood in females and older children. Functional motor and sensory symptoms were the most common, along with other somatic symptoms such as headache and pain. Self-reported psychiatric symptoms and infection/inflammation were the most common predisposing and precipitating factors. At a median follow-up of 15 months, 49% of children reported improvement or resolution of FND symptoms, with no identified prognostic factors.

The Phenomenology of Tics and Tic-Like Behavior in TikTok

Alonso Zea Vera et al.

Summary: Pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists have observed an increase in functional disorders with tic-like behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most TikTok videos under #tourettes depict atypical tic phenomenology that does not represent typical Tourette syndrome symptoms, suggesting a potential influence of social media on disease modeling.

Psychiatric and personality factors in pediatric functional seizures: A prospective case-control study

Lindsay Stager et al.

Summary: This study assessed the psychiatric and personality characteristics of pediatric functional seizures (FS). The findings showed that children with FS had more somatization and poorer quality of life compared to the control group, but similar rates of psychiatric symptoms, trauma, and maladaptive personality traits. Psychiatric or personality factors did not predict the likelihood of FS.

Coping, Resilience, and Social Support Among Transgender and Gender Diverse Individuals Experiencing Gender-Related Stress

Kaitlyn R. Gorman et al.

Summary: This study explores coping strategies, resilience, and social support among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals. The findings suggest that TGD individuals use strategic avoidance and modulate their gender presentation to manage gender-related stress. They also develop TGD spaces and engage in intragroup prosocial behaviors to sustain resilience and social support. Despite existing literature on TGD risk, most participants reported significant self-compassion and effective coping strategies.

A. de Liege et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess whether French junior neurologists, psychiatrists, and physical and rehabilitation medicine (PRM) specialists received teaching on functional neurological disorders (FND) during their medical studies and evaluate their knowledge and perception of the disorder. The results showed that most respondents from the three specialties had never received any teaching on FND and felt they were not sufficiently trained in FND.

When neurologists diagnose functional neurological disorder, why don't they code for it?

Lorena DoVal Herbert et al.

Summary: Noncoding for functional neurological disorders (FND) is common among pediatric neurologists, with multiple factors hindering proper face-to-face communication. Outdated beliefs, such as considering FND a diagnosis of exclusion, significantly contribute to the underutilization of FND-related ICD-10 codes. Research based on coding information may underestimate the impact of FND by more than fourfold.

Summary: The study found that dispositional hope and its components (agency and pathways) play an important moderating role in TGD adults, strengthening the relationship between perceived burdensomeness and suicidal ideation and behaviors. Higher levels of dispositional hope and its components may provide protection for TGD adults experiencing lower levels of perceived burdensomeness, reducing their risk of suicidal ideation and behaviors.
