Ipsilesional volume loss of basal ganglia and thalamus is associated with poor hand function after ischemic perinatal stroke

Nigul Ilves et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between subcortical structure volumes and hand motor function in children with perinatal stroke (PS), as well as to compare the volumes of subcortical structures between PS children and healthy controls. The results showed that PS children had smaller volumes of certain subcortical structures, which were correlated with hand motor function. This study highlights the importance of evaluating subcortical structures in predicting motor outcome following perinatal stroke.

Perinatal arterial ischemic stroke and periventricular venous infarction in infants with unilateral cerebral palsy

Melissa Vitagliano et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore clinical factors associated with perinatal arterial ischemic stroke (AIS) and periventricular venous infarction (PVI) in infants who develop unilateral cerebral palsy (CP). The results showed that AIS was mainly associated with acute intrapartum factors, while PVI was associated with in utero factors.

Summary: Pathogenic COL4A1/2 variants were detected in 56 individuals out of 218 suspected cases of COL4A1/2-related brain defects. Prenatal ultrasound abnormalities were found in individuals with these variants, often involving brain defects, extracranial anomalies, and fetal growth restriction.

Antenatal diagnosis of fetal intraventricular hemorrhage: systematic review and meta-analysis

Mary J. Dunbar et al.

Summary: The severity of antenatally diagnosed germinal matrix-intraventricular hemorrhage (GMH-IVH), particularly the presence of venous infarction, is associated with overall mortality and morbidity. Shunt placement may be influenced by gestational age at GMH-IVH diagnosis and in utero progression. Risk factors for fetal GMH-IVH are not well understood and further controlled studies are needed.

Prevalence of COL4A1 and COL4A2 mutations in severe fetal multifocal hemorrhagic and/or ischemic cerebral lesions

P. Maurice et al.

Summary: In our study, 18 out of 956 cases (1.9%) in our population showed a phenotype suggestive of cerebral injury, with 28% of them having associated COL4A1 or COL4A2 gene mutations. This suggests that these gene mutations should be systematically sought in cases of severe and/or multifocal hemorrhagic or ischemic-hemorrhagic cerebral lesions.

Deletion in COL4A2 is associated with a three-generation variable phenotype: from fetal to adult manifestations

Moran Hausman-Kedem et al.

Summary: Genetic alterations in COL4A2 are less common than those of COL4A1 and their fetal phenotype has not been described to date. In this study, a three-generation family with an intragenic deletion in COL4A2 associated with prenatal intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and various cerebrovascular manifestations is reported. The study provides genetic evidence of prenatal ICH and highlights the variable phenotype and partial penetrance of this disease.

Genetic Profiling of Idiopathic Antenatal Intracranial Haemorrhage: What We Know?

Anna Franca Cavaliere et al.

Summary: Intracranial hemorrhage in fetuses can have various causes, including infectious diseases, maternal drug exposure, and genetic factors. A review of the literature identified specific genes such as Hemostatic and protrombotic genes as potential causes of fetal ICH. Identification of genetic causes can help in counseling for recurrence risk and guide optimal management and treatment of newborns.
