Dynamics of self-propelled tracer particles inside a polymer network

Praveen Kumar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of tracer particles in mesh-like environments and finds that the size of the particles and the stiffness of the network affect their motion. Larger particles experience more confinement from the network particles, resulting in intermediate-time subdiffusion, while smaller particles or those with high self-propulsion velocities can easily escape from the cages, showing intermediate-time superdiffusion. The stiffness of the network slows down the dynamics of the tracer particles, with larger particles exhibiting longer-lived intermediate time superdiffusion. Active tracer particles exhibit more pronounced non-Gaussian behavior at the intermediate time scale.

Active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck model for self-propelled particles with inertia

G. H. Philipp Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the inertial effects of self-propelled particles by extending the active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck model. Analytical solutions of the particle's mean-squared displacement and velocity autocorrelation function are summarized and discussed for different scenarios. The role of initial particle velocity in a nonstationary setup is taken into account, and the observed dynamical exponents range from zero to four. In most cases, the behavior reverts to that of an overdamped particle after a certain inertial time, except for harmonically confined systems where inertia enhances overall displacement. Additionally, an underdamped model with time-dependent mass is considered, showing significant influence on particle displacement in the intermediate time-regime. For a sufficiently large mass accumulation rate, the particle's motion is completely governed by inertial effects and remains superdiffusive for all times.

Active Turbulence

Ricard Alert et al.

Summary: Active fluids, such as bacterial suspensions and sperm cells, exhibit complex spatiotemporal flows reminiscent of inertial turbulence. This phenomenon, known as active turbulence, is characterized by power-law scaling and the absence of energy cascades. The emergence of power-law scaling and the self-organized nature of energy injection distinguish active turbulence from inertial turbulence.

Formulation of Chromatin Mobility as a Function of Nuclear Size during C. elegans Embryogenesis Using Polymer Physics Theories

Aiya K. Yesbolatova et al.

Summary: By analyzing the mean-square displacement of chromatin loci, researchers found that the chromatin motion decreases during early embryogenesis of Caenorhabditis elegans. By normalizing the displacement-time relationships, they discovered a collapse of the relationships into a single master curve, indicating the onset of entangled dynamics with the size of the chromatin polymer tube diameter.

Active Diffusion of Self-Propelled Particles in Flexible Polymer Networks

Yeongjin Kim et al.

Summary: This study computationally explores the diffusion mechanism of self-propelled agents in biopolymer networks. The dynamics of active tracers show rich and distinct physics depending on the mesh-to-particle size and Peclet number. The study reveals that when the particle is smaller than the mesh size ratio, it moves similarly to free space but with decreased mobility. However, when the particle size is increased to be comparable to the mesh size, the active particles explore the polymer network through trapping and hopping mechanisms.

Effects of Transcription-Dependent Physical Perturbations on the Chromosome Dynamics in Living Cells

Hyeyeong Ku et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that transcription directly affects chromatin dynamics. This study measured the diffusion characteristics of chromatin and found that transcription inhibitors increase chromatin movement, while DNA intercalating inhibitors have the opposite effect. The study also investigated the impact of volume confinement in the nucleus on chromatin movements.

Mucus-Inspired Dynamic Hydrogels: Synthesis and Future Perspectives

Raju Bej et al.

Summary: Mucus hydrogels at biointerfaces play a crucial role in protecting against foreign pathogens and facilitating biological functions of underlying cells. Developing a synthetic model system that mimics the properties and functions of native mucus and can be synthesized on a large scale would greatly advance mucus-related research for understanding infectious diseases. However, synthesizing such biofunctional hydrogels in the lab is highly challenging due to their complex chemical compositions and specific chemical interactions within the gel network. This perspective discusses the chemical structures and physicochemical interactions responsible for the unique properties and functions of mucus hydrogels, explores different approaches for preparing mucus-inspired hydrogels, and highlights the challenges and opportunities in achieving desired de novo synthetic mucus hydrogels.

Partitioning of active particles into porous media

Camilla M. Kjeldbjerg et al.

Summary: Passive Brownian particles distribute evenly between porous medium and fluid reservoir, while active particles tend to accumulate near boundaries and preferentially partition into the porous medium. The study explores the behavior of active swimmers partitioning into a porous medium from a bulk fluid reservoir, showing oscillatory behavior at short times and steady state concentration partitioning at longer times.

A geometric criterion for the optimal spreading of active polymers in porous media

Christina Kurzthaler et al.

Summary: Efficient navigation through porous environments by swimming microorganisms and microrobots can be optimized by adjusting their run lengths to match the longest straight path available in the porous medium, a criterion termed as the optimal spreading criterion. This criterion unifies results for porous media with different pore sizes and shapes and for run-and-tumble polymers, providing a fundamental principle for achieving optimal transport of active agents in densely-packed biological and environmental settings.

Phase Diagram of Active Brownian Spheres: Crystallization and the Metastability of Motility-Induced Phase Separation

Ahmad K. Omar et al.

Summary: For three-dimensional active Brownian particles, it has been found that metastable states of motility-induced phase separation (MIPS) coexistence decay over long times through an ordering transition called active crystallization. At activity levels just above the MIPS critical point, the liquid-gas binodal is superseded by the crystal-fluid coexistence curve, with solid, liquid, and gas all coexisting at the triple point. Nucleating an active crystal from a disordered fluid requires rare fluctuations exhibiting close-packed density of the solid phase.

Chain stiffness boosts active nanoparticle transport in polymer networks

Xue-Zheng Cao et al.

Summary: Recent advancements in nanotechnology have allowed for the design of active nanoparticles capable of penetrating biolayers for biomedical applications like drug delivery. The interactions between active nanoparticle motility and polymer networks at different scales remain unclear. Research using molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated that in cross-linked, concentrated polymer networks, the mobility of active nanoparticles increases with chain stiffness, unlike passive nanoparticles. In flexible networks, active nanoparticles exhibit behavior similar to passive nanoparticles, with increased mobility proportional to the self-propulsion force. These findings suggest potential design strategies for active nanoparticles to penetrate stiff biopolymer matrices.
