Solvation structures of calcium and magnesium ions in water with the presence of hydroxide: a study by deep potential molecular dynamics

Jianchuan Liu et al.

Summary: This study uses the deep potential molecular dynamics (DPMD) method to simulate the solvation structures of calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+) ions with hydroxide (OH-) ion in water. The study provides new insights into the differences in the solvation structures of Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions in the presence of OH-, showing that OH- has a more significant effect on the solvation structure of Ca2+ compared to Mg2+. In addition, the study reveals the changes in the solvation structure of OH- in the presence of the cations.

Pure and Hybrid SCAN, rSCAN, and r2SCAN: Which One Is Preferred in KS- and HF-DFT Calculations, and How Does D4 Dispersion Correction Affect This Ranking?

Golokesh Santra et al.

Summary: This study tested the performance of different types of KS-DFT and HF-DFT functionals using the large GMTKN55 dataset, finding that pure HF-SCANn outperforms other methods, while all three HF-DFT-D4 variants perform similarly when dispersion correction is included. Overall, r(2)SCANn showed superior performance across the board.

Dissolving salt is not equivalent to applying a pressure on water

Chunyi Zhang et al.

Summary: By using advanced machine learning techniques, researchers have found that dissolving salt in water does not lead to drastic changes in the structure of water. Contrary to previous beliefs about the pressure effect, the study shows that the ions in salt water only disrupt the hydrogen bond network within the first solvation shells, without significantly altering the oxygen radial-distribution function. This finding challenges the widely accepted pressure-like effect in Hofmeister series ionic solutions.

Structural and dynamic properties of solvated hydroxide and hydronium ions in water from ab initio modeling

Renxi Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the solvated hydroxide and hydronium ions in water using AIMD simulations with the SCAN functional and compares the results to those obtained with the PBE0-TS functional. We find that the SCAN functional provides a reliable choice for describing the structure and dynamics of these water ions, and that hydroxide and hydronium exhibit significantly different patterns of proton transfer and diffusion. This research is important for understanding the behavior of ions in water.

Accurate stress calculations based on numerical atomic orbital bases: and benchmarks

Daye Zheng et al.

Summary: The study presents a detailed formalism for stress calculations based on numerical atomic orbital bases and demonstrates its accuracy and faster convergence compared to calculations using plane wave bases. This enables accurate stress calculations at a relatively low cost. An analysis is provided to elucidate the origin of this behavior.

A Comparison of Exact and Model Exchange-Correlation Potentials for Molecules

Bikash Kanungo et al.

Summary: Accurate exchange-correlation potentials for three-dimensional systems can now be tested using the exact XC potential, providing a promising new direction for building more accurate XC functionals for DFT. Among the model XC functionals, SCAN0 offers the best agreement with the exact XC potential, highlighting the importance of satisfying exact conditions and including nonlocal effects in XC functionals.
