Exploring Functional Photonic Devices made from a Chiral Metal-Organic Framework Material by a Multiscale Computational Method

Benedikt Zerulla et al.

Summary: Electronic circular dichroism is an important optical phenomenon for studying chiral molecular materials. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline porous thin-film materials with tailored chemical and physical properties. Combining these two aspects, researchers aim to create devices with unprecedented functionality. However, advanced modeling techniques are needed to address the complexity of material choices and structural details. A computational workflow that combines quantum chemical methods with optical simulations is proposed, focusing on chiral properties in UiO-67-BINOL MOFs.

Natural virtual orbitals for the GW method in the random-phase approximation and beyond

Laurenz Monzel et al.

Summary: The GW method is popular for determining vertical ionization energies in molecular systems, but it may be computationally intensive depending on the formalism and range of orbitals used. Correlated natural virtual orbitals based on MP2 and direct MP2 correlation energies are implemented to alleviate the computational scaling issue. These correlated NVOs significantly improve efficiency for larger molecular systems and basis sets.

Practical Post-Kohn-Sham Methods for Time-Reversal Symmetry Breaking References

Christof Holzer

Summary: The applicability of reduced scaling algorithms based on auxiliary subspace methods for the correlation energy from the random phase approximation (RPA) and the correlation part of the self-energy obtained from the GW method is demonstrated for time-reversal symmetry breaking Kohn-Sham (KS) references. The updated algorithms efficiently evaluate RPA energies and GW quasiparticle energies for molecular systems with KS references breaking time-reversal symmetry, such as those in magnetic fields or relativistic open-shell molecules. The reduced-scaling algorithms achieve negligible errors compared to reference implementations and significantly reduce computational scaling by two orders of magnitude. Ionization energies from the GW approximation remain robust even for complex trivalent lanthanoid ions, and the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) can be used to calculate light-matter interactions of these systems using GW quasiparticle energies. The combined GW-BSE method enables the calculation of absorption and emission spectra of a molecular europium-(III) complex with spin-orbit coupling.

Accurate X-ray Absorption Spectra near L- and M-Edges from Relativistic Four-Component Damped Response Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory

Lukas Konecny et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the successful application of linear damped response time-dependent density functional theory based on a four-component Dirac-Coulomb Hamiltonian for simulating X-ray absorption spectra accurately. The influence of exchange-correlation functional and Hartree-Fock exchange on the accuracy of the calculated spectra is highlighted, with the optimal value for spectral regions above 1000 eV being 60%. Overall, the methodology proves to be reliable for calculating and analyzing X-ray absorption spectra, providing a reference for benchmarking more approximate techniques.

Modeling and measuring plasmonic excitations in hollow spherical gold nanoparticles

Marvin M. Mueller et al.

Summary: In this study, molecular plasmonic excitations sustained in hollow spherical gold nanoparticles were investigated using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). The energy-based plasmonicity index was generalized to the framework of DFT to quantify the plasmonic character of the excitations obtained. Comparison with classical Mie theory allowed distinguishing between classically explainable features and those requiring a quantum-mechanical treatment. The study also explored the impact of a double-shell system on the plasmonic character and absorption cross sections.

NMR Coupling Constants Based on the Bethe-Salpeter Equation in the GW Approximation

Yannick J. Franzke et al.

Summary: The study introduces the extension of the Green's function GW method and the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) to molecular response properties, discussing both one-component and two-component formalisms to accurately study heavy-element systems. The methodology efficiently utilizes conventional central processing units (CPUs) and modern graphics processing units (GPUs) for calculations involving thousands of basis functions, showing the importance of Hartree-Fock exchange in providing a reliable starting point for GW quasi-particle energy calculations. The improved results for NMR coupling constants are achieved through the admixture of Kohn-Sham correlation kernel, leading to remarkable outcomes when combined with other methods like the eigenvalue-only self-consistent variant (evGW) and Becke's half and half functional (BH&HLYP).

Optimally tuned starting point for single-shot GW calculations of solids

Summary: This study investigates the accuracy of the WOT-SRSH functional as a generalized Kohn-Sham starting point for single-shot GW calculations. The results show that G(0)W(0)@WOT-SRSH provides comparable precision and accuracy in computing band gaps to more advanced methods, and improves the description of states deeper in the valence band manifold. Additionally, G(0)W(0)@WOT-SRSH reduces the sensitivity of computed band gaps to ambiguities in the tuning procedure.

XABOOM: An X-ray Absorption Benchmark of Organic Molecules Based on Carbon, Nitrogen, and Oxygen 1s → π* Transitions

Thomas Fransson et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of several standard and popular approaches for calculating X-ray absorption spectra for organic molecules, focusing on the precision of transition energies and intensities rather than accuracy. The use of exchange-correlation functionals tailored for time-dependent DFT calculations showed similar error spreads to more standard functionals while yielding superior absolute energies. Long-range corrected functionals performed particularly well, with error spreads in energy and intensity close to 0.2-0.3 eV and 10%, respectively.

Summary: An all-electron implementation of quasiparticle self-consistent GW for molecular systems is presented, achieving fast and stable convergence with good agreement compared to other codes.
