Inelastic scattering of OH from a liquid PFPE surface: Resolution of correlated speed and angular distributions

Summary: In this study, inelastic collisions of OH with an inert liquid perfluoropolyether (PFPE) surface were experimentally investigated. OH molecules were directed at a continually refreshed PFPE surface using a pulsed molecular beam with a kinetic energy distribution peaking at 35 kJ mol(-1). Scattered OH molecules were detected state-selectively with spatial and temporal resolution, and their speed and angular distributions were analyzed. The results show that the speed distributions were strongly superthermal and the angular distributions were dependent on the incidence angle, consistent with impulsive scattering. The roughness of the PFPE surface was confirmed through molecular dynamics simulations.
