Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Chemistry Student and Staff Perceptions of their Learning/Teaching Experience

Harvey Broad et al.

Summary: In response to COVID-19, the University of Leicester implemented blended teaching for Chemistry courses. Data collected from surveys, focus groups, and interviews with 94 students and 13 staff members showed that while some students struggled to engage with remote material, they were satisfied with the university's pandemic response. Staff members faced challenges in gauging student engagement in synchronous contact sessions, but praised the availability of digital tools for facilitating student interaction. The study suggests the potential for wider implementation of blended learning and provides recommendations for reinforcing the community of inquiry in this mode.

Smartphone-Assisted Colorimetric Determination of Iron Ions in Water by Using Anthocyanin from Ruellia tuberosa L. as a Green Indicator and Application for Hands-on Experiment Kit

Rattapol Meelapsom et al.

Summary: This study presents a simple experiment kit for colorimetric quantification of ferric (III) ion (Fe3+) using anthocyanin extracted from Ruellia tuberosa L. as a green indicator in an aqueous medium. The experiment involves extracting anthocyanin using hot water, forming a colored Fe3+-anthocyanin complex on a homemade plate, capturing the color with a smartphone, and measuring the color intensity using ImageJ software. The method enables detection of Fe3+ at low concentrations and shows good linearity within a certain concentration range. The concentrations of Fe3+ determined using this method were comparable to those obtained with UV-visible spectrophotometry. Moreover, the extracted anthocyanin remained stable for two months when stored at 4 degrees C. The experiment improved students' understanding of oxidation-reduction and determination of iron, as assessed by a diagnostic conceptual test.

Remote Teaching of Chemistry Laboratory Courses during COVID-19

Ana M. Diez-Pascual et al.

Summary: This paper describes the transition from face-to-face education to emergency remote teaching in chemistry laboratory courses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Virtualization was achieved through the use of videos and questionnaires, with teachers providing remote support and feedback. Teachers acted as guides, promoting active learning and providing continuous feedback. The impact of this teaching method was evaluated through assessments and comparisons with traditional on-site education.

Lab-at-Home: Hands-On Green Analytical Chemistry Laboratory for New Normal Experimentation

Chonnipa Yeerum et al.

Summary: Analytical chemistry educators in Thailand have adapted their teaching methods to the new normal brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, by implementing Lab-at-Home (LAH) experiments. Despite overall satisfaction with the LAH as a tool for new normal experimentation, some students faced poor internet connections during synchronous online classes.

Spectrophotometric Fluoride Determination Using St. John's Wort Extract as a Green Chromogenic Complexant for Al(III)

Batuhan Yardimci et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel and eco-friendly chromogenic agent for fluoride determination was developed using green analytical chemistry. The method made use of a non-toxic Al(III)-flavonoid complex from St. John's wort plant extract. The method showed a linear response within the F- concentration range of 0.11-1.32 mM, with low LOD and LOQ values that met the permissible limits for fluoride in water. Interference effects from common anions and cations were investigated and easily eliminated with specific techniques. The method was successfully applied to real water samples and validated against a reference spectroscopic method.

Home-based laboratory experiences during COVID-19 pandemic in undergraduate biochemistry students

Victoria Velarde et al.

Summary: The coronavirus pandemic has posed new challenges to laboratory-based teaching. To address the interruption of practical sessions, home-based experiments were designed to help students understand key concepts in biochemistry. The experiments involved visual identification of macromolecules using common household items and recording the activities with smartphones. A survey showed that the home activities improved students' understanding of macromolecules, but effective instructor feedback and student interaction are crucial.
