Stem cell-based therapies for temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis and regeneration of cartilage/osteochondral defects: a systematic review of preclinical experiments

H. R. Matheus et al.

Summary: Stem cell-based therapies have the potential for treating Temporomandibular Joint Osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA) and regenerating cartilage/osteochondral defects. Regardless of cell origin, stem cell-based therapeutic approaches exhibit protective, anti-inflammatory, and chondroregenerative potential in the treatment of TMJ-OA.

CRISPR-Cas9-mediated loss of function of β-catenin attenuates intervertebral disc degeneration

Yunshan Fan et al.

Summary: Targeting beta-catenin in disc cells through CRISPR-Cas9 has been shown to have multifaceted therapeutic effects on disc degeneration, including protection of notochordal cells and attenuation of chondro-osteogenesis in the nucleus pulposus, as well as maintenance of the annulus fibrosus structure. This study suggests that beta-catenin plays a fundamental role in the remodeling and degenerative processes of the intervertebral disc and demonstrates that CRISPR-Cas9 is a useful tool for identifying new drug targets and developing therapeutic strategies for disc degeneration.

Molecular signaling in temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis

Ke Lu et al.

Summary: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis (OA) is a TMJ disorder characterized by pain, movement limitation, cartilage degeneration, and joint dysfunction. This review article summarizes recent findings on signaling pathways involved in TMJ OA development and progression, highlighting the importance of understanding these pathways for potential therapeutic strategies. Multiple signaling pathways, including Wnt/beta-catenin, TGF-beta and BMP, Indian Hedgehog, FGF, NF-kappa B, and Notch pathways, are implicated in the pathological process of TMJ OA.

Prevalence of temporomandibular joint disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Ligia Figueiredo Valesan et al.

Summary: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the prevalence of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJD) among the general population. The overall prevalence of TMJD was approximately 31% for adults/elderly and 11% for children/adolescents, with the most prevalent TMJD being disc displacement with reduction (DDwR). Knowledge about the frequency of TMJD can encourage dentists to consider appropriate strategies for early and correct diagnosis and management.
