Efficient synthesis of bioetheric fuel additive by combining the reductive and direct etherification of furfural in one-pot over Pd nanoparticles deposited on zeolites

Xiaowen Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the particle size effect of Pd catalysts on the reductive etherification of furfural. It is found that Pd nanoparticles larger than 3 nm are suitable for one-step reductive etherification. Based on this finding, a Pd/ZSM-5 bifunctional catalyst is prepared by introducing amino organosilane, which successfully achieves one-pot synthesis of ether via reductive etherification and direct etherification, while suppressing undesired side-reactions.

Enhancement effect of strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) on the catalytic activity of substituted-hydroxyapatite supported Au clusters

Akihiro Nakayama et al.

Summary: Cation-and anion-substituted hydroxyapatites (sHAPs) supported gold catalysts exhibit strong metal support interaction (SMSI) under oxidative atmosphere, enhancing the cationic properties of gold and increasing catalytic activity. Controlling the degree of SMSI allows for tuning the electronic state of metal nanoparticles and providing highly active and durable catalysts for target reactions.

Opening up a Radical Cross-Coupling Etherification Path by a Defect-Rich Cu/ZrO2 Catalyst for a High-Value Transformation of HMF

Xiumin Li et al.

Summary: By designing the catalyst Cu/ZrO2 with unpaired electron defects, a radical coupling path for the construction of C-O bonds in the reduction-etherification of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was opened up. The key step of the etherification process to achieve 2,5-bis(isopropoxymethyl)furan (BPMF) was proven to belong to a radical-related route. The formation of key radical intermediates and the induction mechanism of alkoxy radical intermediate were elucidated, providing insights into the downstream production of high-value transformation of HMF and the construction of C-O bonds in other heterogeneous reaction systems.

Crystal-phase-depended strong metal-support interactions enhancing hydrodeoxygenation of m-cresol on Ni/TiO2 catalysts

Beilei Cui et al.

Summary: The activity and selectivity of Ni for the hydrodeoxygenation of m-cresol can be modified through strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) differences on anatase and rutile TiO2 crystal phases. The Ni/r-TiO2 catalyst reduced at 650 degrees C exhibited moderate SMSI and was selective to toluene while completely inhibiting CH4 formation. The turnover frequency for DDO on the Ni/r-TiO2 catalyst reduced at 650 degrees C was significantly higher compared to Ni on rutile and anatase reduced at 350 degrees C.

CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol on Indium Oxide-Supported Rhenium Catalysts: The Effects of Size

Chenyang Shen et al.

Summary: In this study, the size of In2O3-supported rhenium (Re) catalysts was found to significantly impact the CO2 hydrogenation reaction. Atomically dispersed Re species with a positive charge on the Re/In2O3 catalyst surface showed high activity and stability for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, while the presence of Re nanoclusters favored methane production. Catalyst characterization and theoretical calculations confirmed the influence of catalyst size on hydrogen activation and the selectivity of the CO2 hydrogenation reaction.

Estimating a social cost of carbon for global energy consumption

Summary: The research suggests that releasing one ton of CO2 today is projected to reduce total future energy expenditures, contradicting previous studies. It is predicted that emerging economies in the tropics will greatly increase electricity consumption as global mean surface temperature rises, while reductions in heating in colder countries will offset this growth.
