Surgeon experience in glioblastoma surgery of the elderly-a multicenter, retrospective cohort study

Johannes P. Poeppe et al.

Summary: A retrospective case-by-case analysis was conducted to assess the impact of individual surgeon experience on overall survival (OS), extent of resection (EOR), and surgery-related morbidity in elderly patients with glioblastoma (GBM). The study found that less experienced neurosurgeons achieve similar surgical results and outcomes as experienced neurosurgeons in academic teaching hospitals. Adjuvant treatment and avoiding surgery-related morbidity are crucial for improving treatment outcomes in this patient population.

Impact of maximal extent of resection on postoperative deficits, patient functioning, and survival within clinically important glioblastoma subgroups

Jasper K. W. Gerritsen et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of extent of resection, residual tumor volume, and gross-total resection on neurological and functional outcomes in patients with glioblastoma. The results showed that a larger extent of resection and smaller residual tumor volume were significantly associated with improved overall survival and progression-free survival in all patient subgroups, with residual tumor volume being a stronger prognostic factor.

SEER-based risk stratification system for patients with primary non-cirrhotic liver cancer

Runmin Cao et al.

Summary: This study developed and validated a nomogram and risk stratification system to evaluate overall survival in non-cirrhotic hepatocellular carcinoma patients. Independent prognostic indicators included AFP levels, surgical intervention, T-stage, tumor size, and M-stage. The nomogram showed better prognostic accuracy compared to the AJCC staging system.

Effectiveness of different treatment strategies in elderly patients with glioblastoma: An evidence map of randomized controlled trials

Wenbin Ma et al.

Summary: This study summarizes the RCTs evidence for treatment strategies in elderly patients with glioblastoma and identifies research gaps. Results show that there is substantial evidence for the effectiveness of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and chemo-radiotherapy, but limited evidence for targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and tumor treating fields therapy. Fewer studies have focused on recurrent patients, particularly in terms of immunotherapy and targeted therapy.

Surgical strategies for older patients with glioblastoma

Tanyeri Barak et al.

Summary: In older patients with glioblastoma, surgical resection should be considered even for those with poor Karnofsky Performance Score. Intraoperative MRI does not show significant benefits over intraoperative ultrasonography, but significantly prolongs the length of surgery, which can impact patient care outcomes.

Competing risk model to determine the prognostic factors and treatment strategies for elderly patients with glioblastoma

Zhuo-yi Liu et al.

Summary: This study identified prognostic factors and optimal treatment for elderly patients with glioblastoma (GBM) through analyzing data from a large cohort. Factors such as age, race, tumor size, and tumor location were found to affect GBM-related mortality, with gross total resection, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and chemoRT being protective factors for GBM-related death. A nomogram was developed to predict mortality rates, with GTR followed by chemoRT being suggested as the optimal treatment option.

Real-world evaluation of the impact of radiotherapy and chemotherapy in elderly patients with glioblastoma based on age and performance status

Summary: This retrospective study investigated the impact of management and outcomes of elderly patients with glioblastoma, finding that good performance status is a key prognostic factor. Across all age groups, combined chemotherapy and radiation therapy resulted in better survival outcomes compared to other treatment modalities.
