Multiclassifier Radiomics Analysis of Ultrasound for Prediction of Extrathyroidal Extension in Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma in Children

Jie Li et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore extrathyroidal extension (ETE) in pediatric papillary thyroid carcinoma using a multiclassifier ultrasound radiomic model. Radiomics features were extracted from ultrasound images and supervised machine learning models were developed. The LightGBM model showed excellent performance in both training and validation.

Liver cancer risk quantification through an artificial neural network based on personal health data

Afrouz Ataei et al.

Summary: This study developed an artificial neural network (ANN) model to predict liver cancer risk based on basic health data and habits/lifestyles. The model showed promising results in predicting liver cancer risk, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.80 and 0.81 for training and testing cohorts, respectively. This novel method has the potential to enable early detection of liver cancer in high-risk populations.

Update on the applications and limitations of alpha-fetoprotein for hepatocellular carcinoma

Hira Hanif et al.

Summary: Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a tumor marker for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but its utility is limited. However, combining AFP with other novel biomarkers can improve its accuracy. Additionally, increased AFP levels may be associated with liver diseases and other non-hepatic disorders.

Hepatitis B functional cure and immune response

Jia-Rui Zheng et al.

Summary: Hepatitis B virus infection causes indirect damage to hepatocytes through the immune system. The exhaustion of virus-specific immune cells and immune suppression by virus antigens contribute to the chronicity of the infection. Functional cure can be achieved by restoring the specific immune function, providing a theoretical basis for complete cure of hepatitis B.

Hepatocellular carcinoma

Josep M. Llovet et al.

Summary: Liver cancer, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), poses a significant global health challenge with rising incidence projected to exceed 1 million cases by 2025. Infection by hepatitis B and C viruses remains a major risk factor for HCC, while non-alcoholic steatohepatitis is emerging as a more common risk factor in Western countries. Advances in systemic therapies for HCC, including immunotherapies and targeted therapies, are expected to revolutionize the management of this disease.
