Improving Recognition of Fracture Risk in People with Human Immunodeficiency Virus: Performance and Model Contribution of Two Common Risk Assessment Tools

Pilar Vizcarra et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of FRAX and QFracture scoring systems in predicting fragility fractures in HIV patients. The results showed that both tools displayed acceptable discrimination, but significantly underestimated the risk of fragility fractures. The recommended assessment thresholds were not suitable for this population as they failed to identify individuals with fragility fractures during follow-up.

Predicting critical illness on initial diagnosis of COVID-19 based on easily obtained clinical variables: development and validation of the PRIORITY model

Miguel Martinez-Lacalzada et al.

Summary: A predictive model was developed and validated to identify COVID-19 patients at risk of critical outcomes based on clinical history and examination findings. The PRIORITY model, utilizing easily obtained clinical information, showed high discrimination and generalizability in predicting critical outcomes for COVID-19 patients.

Prediction of Osteoporotic Fractures in Elderly Individuals: A Derivation and Internal Validation Study Using Healthcare Administrative Data

Claudia Beaudoin et al.

Summary: This study derived and validated predictive models using healthcare administrative data to accurately identify individuals at high risk of osteoporotic fracture. The models included predictors such as age, sex, diabetes, and were found to have good predictive performance, especially for predicting hip/femur fractures. Further validation in external cohorts is recommended for future surveillance of osteoporosis.

Incident bone fracture and mortality in a large HIV cohort outpatient study, 2000-2017, USA

Linda Battalora et al.

Summary: The study showed an association between bone fractures and mortality among persons with HIV, with incidents of fractures increasing the risk of all-cause mortality by 48%. This highlights the importance of bone mineral density screening and fracture prevention in this population. Additionally, while fracture rates increased over time among persons with HIV, post-fracture death rates decreased, likely due to advancements in HIV care.
