Potential barriers to female participation exist from the beginning of medical education. Summary: The study found that academic performance metrics influence admissions into an orthopaedic residency, with minority applicants facing lower odds of admission even when academic performance is considered. Changes in the residency selection process are needed to eliminate this disparity in admission probability for qualified minority applicants.

Summary: Despite improvements in gender equality among surgical workforce in the UK in recent years, significant differences still exist between different surgical specialties. The representation of female doctors is increasing in most specialties, but remains relatively low in pediatric surgery and vascular surgery. It is estimated that achieving gender parity in certain specialties will require continued efforts for several decades.

Racial, Ethnic, and Gender Diversity in Academic Orthopaedic Surgery Leadership

Summary: Diversity in orthopaedic surgery leadership has made some progress, particularly in terms of gender diversity among chairpersons. However, there has been a significant decrease in minority and gender representation among orthopaedic faculty and orthopaedic leadership in 2019/2020 (p < 0.05), which is a trend seen in other specialties as well. These findings may suggest a more widespread issue of diversity in medical leadership that goes beyond orthopaedic surgery.

Gender associations with selection into Australian Orthopaedic Surgical Training: 2007-2019

Summary: This study found that in the selection process of orthopaedic surgical training in Australia, male applicants tended to have higher CV and referee report scores, but there was no gender bias observed in the interview and final selection stages. Leaders in postgraduate training should examine and address unconscious biases in commonly used selection procedures to promote gender diversity in the field.

Summary: A study conducted on medical students from 27 US medical schools who had completed orthopaedic rotations found that students from demographic backgrounds who are not the majority in orthopaedics generally perceived orthopaedic surgery as less diverse and inclusive. However, these views often changed after a clinical orthopaedic rotation.

There is a significant disparity in specialist surgical workforce density between provinces, with an increase in the proportion of females and non-white specialists over the past 15 years.
