Comparison of Prophylactic Intravenous Antibiotic Regimens After Endoprosthetic Reconstruction for Lower Extremity Bone Tumors A Randomized Clinical Trial

Michelle Ghert et al.

Summary: This randomized clinical trial compared the effectiveness of a 5-day regimen of postoperative intravenous antibiotics with a 1-day regimen in preventing surgical site infections after surgery for lower extremity bone tumors. The study found no significant difference in the rate of surgical site infections between the two regimens. However, the 5-day regimen group had significantly more antibiotic-related complications.

Defining Minimally Important Differences in Functional Outcomes in Musculoskeletal Oncology

Aaron M. Gazendam et al.

Summary: This study determined the minimally important differences (MIDs) for Musculoskeletal Tumor Society Rating Scale-93 (MSTS-93) and Toronto Extremity Salvage Score (TESS) in patients undergoing lower-extremity endoprosthetic reconstruction for musculoskeletal tumors. Two methods, anchor-based and distribution-based, yielded different results, but anchor-based MIDs were recommended.

Prediction of Prolonged Length of Hospital Stay After Cancer Surgery Using Machine Learning on Electronic Health Records: Retrospective Cross-sectional Study

Yong-Yeon Jo et al.

Summary: Machine learning approach using electronic health records (EHRs) was used to develop a prediction model for prolonged length of stay after cancer surgery. The study analyzed EHRs of 42,751 patients from a single cancer center who underwent primary surgery for 17 types of cancer, and employed extreme gradient boosting classifier, multilayer perceptron, and logistic regression models to predict prolonged length of stay after cancer surgery, showing excellent performance for some cancer types.

The need for improved patient reported outcome measures in patients with extremity sarcoma: A narrative review

Thomas J. Blight et al.

Summary: Extremity sarcoma can affect functionality and quality of life. Patients' perspectives are important in evaluating outcomes. Different PROMs have been used in studies, but TESS is the only sarcoma-specific one. Bone sarcoma and extent of resection can predict poor outcomes.
