Heart rate variability in patients with dementia or neurocognitive disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Ying-Chih Cheng et al.

Summary: Heart rate variability is a useful measure for evaluating neurological and psychiatric disorders like dementia. Patients with dementia, especially those with Lewy body dementia and mild cognitive impairment, show lower parasympathetic activity compared to healthy controls. The meta-analysis results suggest that gender may influence the effect size of heart rate variability in dementia patients.

Post-Stroke Cognitive Impairment and Dementia

Natalia S. Rost et al.

Summary: Poststroke cognitive impairment and dementia is a common problem among stroke patients, influenced by factors such as age, education level, preexisting cognitive decline, and history of prior stroke. Manifestations of cerebral small vessel disease also contribute to cognitive outcomes. Understanding the interaction between acute stroke events and preexisting brain pathology is crucial for personalized prediction, prevention, targeted interventions, and rehabilitation.

Impairment of autonomic emotional response for executive function in children with ADHD: A multi-modal fNIRS and pupillometric study during the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test

Yoshimi Kaga et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between emotional changes and executive functions in children with ADHD. By measuring pupil diameter changes, the study found differences in pupil responses during cognitive shift and consecutive correction between children with ADHD and typically developing children. Additionally, there were differences in frontal blood flow changes during cognitive shift between the two groups.

Biomarker counseling, disclosure of diagnosis and follow-up in patients with mild cognitive impairment: A European Alzheimer's disease consortium survey

Kristian S. Frederiksen et al.

Summary: The survey revealed variability in clinical practices across European expert centers diagnosing patients with MCI, highlighting the need for better biomarker counseling and training to improve communication skills. Future initiatives should emphasize the importance of communicating preventive strategies and advance planning.

A Systematic Review of the Application of Functional Near-InfraredSpectroscopy to the Study of Cerebral Hemodynamics in Healthy Aging

Michael K. Yeung et al.

Summary: This article reviews the application of fNIRS in studying age-related changes in cerebral hemodynamics and factors influencing cerebral hemodynamics in the elderly population. A total of 114 fNIRS studies were synthesized, revealing a reduction in resting-state cerebral oxygenation and connectivity in the prefrontal cortex in older adults, as well as increased compensatory activity in the frontal lobe across multiple task domains. The fNIRS literature provides support for neurocognitive aging theories and suggests that fNIRS is a promising tool for aging biomarker development and antiaging interventions due to its motion tolerance and environmental flexibility.

Discovery of a Metabolic Signature Predisposing High Risk Patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment to Converting to Alzheimer's Disease

Yi-Long Huang et al.

Summary: This study utilized untargeted metabolomics analysis to characterize plasma metabolites in MCI patients progressing to AD and stable MCI patients. A 20-metabolite signature panel associated with the presence and progression of AD was identified using machine learning, offering predictive value for conversion from MCI to AD. Additionally, the bacteria-generated metabolite indole-3-propionic acid was identified as a predictor of AD progression, suggesting a role for gut microbiota in AD pathophysiology.

Association of Anxiety Awareness with Risk Factors of Cognitive Decline in MCI

Ariela Gigi et al.

Summary: Studies show that both individuals with MCI and healthy participants experience increased physiological arousal during memory tests, but only healthy participants report enhanced state anxiety. This suggests that individuals with MCI have impaired awareness of their emotional state.

Patterns of brain activity during a set-shifting task linked to mild behavioral impairment in Parkinson's disease

Eun Jin Yoon et al.

Summary: Studies have shown a strong correlation between mild behavioral impairment (MBI) and cognitive performance in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, but the underlying neural activity patterns of cognitive performance linked to MBI are still unclear. In PD patients, MBI appears to reflect deficits in the frontoparietal control network and the hippocampal memory system.

Lanabecestat: Neuroimaging results in early symptomatic Alzheimer's disease

Jennifer A. Zimmer et al.

Summary: Two studies found that lanabecestat can reduce Aβ neuritic plaque burden, but did not have an impact on aggregated tau neurofibrillary tangle burden, cerebral metabolism, and brain volume, instead causing reductions in brain volume. Correlations between imaging markers and cognitive assessments may assist in future study designs.
