Molecular mechanism of drug transport and release through zeolitic imidazole framework nanospheres for versatile drug delivery applications

Zohre Hasanzade et al.

Summary: This study investigates the adsorption and release of the anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) on two bio-compatible zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), ZIF7 and ZIF8, using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The diffusion of the system into the cell membrane (POPC) is also examined. The results show that ZIF7 is more favorable for DOX adsorption due to its strong binding with the drug. The low diffusion coefficient values suggest that both ZIFs can be potential candidates for controlled release of DOX. Moreover, the study reveals that DOX remains bound to ZIFs in its neutral state but is readily released in acidic conditions. Additionally, the behavior of the DOX-ZIF7 system near the cell membrane is studied, indicating that ZIF7 can deliver the drug to the top of the lipid bilayer.

Summary: The performance of nanotubes (NT) as a sensor and nanocarrier for mercaptopurine (MCP) was investigated theoretically. The results showed the interaction and adsorption of MCP on the NTs. The NTs acted as a sensor by enhancing the Raman wavenumbers of MCP. Docking and molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated that BN and CC-NTs showed good drug carrier activity for MCP.

Summary: This study investigated the interactions between drug molecules and SWCNT nano-carriers through all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. The results showed exothermic and spontaneous adsorption of PTX molecules onto pristine and modified SWCNTs, with pi-pi stacking interactions explaining the proper drug adsorption. Differences in drug binding and molecular arrangements were identified among the different functionalized nano-carriers, highlighting the impact of functional groups on drug delivery effectiveness.

Cur-loaded ZnFe2O4@mZnO@N-GQDs biocompatible nano-carriers for smart and controlled targeted drug delivery with pH-triggered and ultrasound irradiation

Media Hafezi et al.

Summary: In this study, a pH/ultrasound-responsive nano-carrier was prepared based on a magnetic core-shell structure and graphene quantum dots doped with nitrogen interlayer shell for controlled release of curcumin. The properties of the nano-carrier were extensively investigated and cytotoxicity assays were conducted on cells, showing no cytotoxic effects at high concentrations. The loaded curcumin exhibited high loading efficiency and sustained release, controllable by ultrasound irradiation and pH adjustment, making it suitable for targeted drug delivery.

Summary: The study investigated the targeted drug delivery performance of f-C3NNTs towards the TPA anti-cancer drug using DFT, showing that f-C3NNTs have a stronger adsorption capacity for TPA with higher solubility in the aqueous medium. Therefore, f-C3NNTs can be considered as a good candidate for the adsorption of TPA in nano-medicine.

Geometry-controlled carbon nanostructures as effective drug delivery carriers for MAO enzyme inhibitors: A DFT study

Milad Nouraliei et al.

Summary: Density functional theory calculations were used to study the drug delivery performance of carbon nanostructures in gas and solvent phases, revealing that the interactions between MAOIs and nanostructures were typically physisorption, and their stability might be contributed to the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Theoretical results showed that the structural properties of MAOIs did not significantly alter the adsorption of drug molecules on carbon nanostructures surfaces.

Investigations of adsorption behavior and anti-cancer activity of curcumin on pure and platinum-functionalized B12N12 nanocages

Yan Cao et al.

Summary: In this study, boron nitride nanoparticles were utilized as drug carriers with improved solubility and stability. The loading of curcumin onto a platinum-decorated B12N12 nanocage was investigated using density functional theory. The results showed strong binding of curcumin with the nanocage, leading to increased charge transfer and significant alterations in molecular properties. Molecular docking studies revealed that curcumin adsorbed on Pt and B atoms of the Pt-B12N12 nanocage and exhibited strong binding affinity with potential therapeutic effects.

Iqra Munir et al.

Summary: In this study, the potential of graphyne as a carrier for the anticancer drug daunorubicin was explored using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. The research revealed the presence of weak interactions between daunorubicin and the graphyne carrier, as well as the charge transfer process from daunorubicin to graphyne during complex formation. Additionally, the study indicated a red-shift in the excited-state spectra of the daunorubicin-graphyne complex, suggesting potential fluorescence-quenching effects.
